Hello and Welcome to The Canteen, too, thank you for sharing your KP experiences with us.
From what I've heard over the years about KP it was not so great an assignment. My step dad, was Retired Army Master Sergeant and POW WWII, he used to talk about KP duty.
I am glad things worked out well for you. Keep coming back to the Canteen, we have different topics daily.

They also cooked eggs to order. And I mean however you wanted it. We (the AF guys) would try and stump them with some sort of weird omelet. They always knew exactly what we ordered and cooked exactly as we requested. It was GREAT.
They also has a guy standing where you put your dishes when finished. His job was to be sure you ate what you ordered. You could get as much as you wanted but you better eat what you got.
We thought they were nuts
I've never eaten in an Army mess hall so I can't comment on them, but if you had ever been slopped in a contracted USAF mess, you would understand their amazement! LOL!
