I liked this part of the article on hostage compensation:

(Tatiana Karpova:) "...They spoke with us tenderly and offered us vacations if we would not publish the book, and so, last summer, many hostages from 'Nord-Ost' went to sanatoriums and rest homes. But then we went ahead and published the book anyway."

For some reason when I read that I thought I heard Curly from the 3 Stooges going "Nyuk-nyuk-nyuk".

I'd heard about the Berlin tunnel a long time ago, but thought that it was an NSA operation (at least, NSA people were the ones bragging about it). According to the 'war story' I heard, when the Soviets discovered it, they (the NSA/CIA/whoever) started filling the tunnel in as fast as the Russians were digging it out, until they reached a point right under the demarcation between Russian/American sectors. Here they placed a marker in 4 languages: "You are entering the American sector" ;-)



BTW: Do you know the difference between a 'war story' and a fairy tale?

I have heard the ‘no bull’ many times, fairy tales were rare.

Bribery comes in all types........glad some got the vacation and even more pleased with the book.

Thanks for the tunnel update, that is priceless.

I want to read that book, but pdf is all but impossible on dial up internet.
