Ahmadinejad Criticized Over Nuke Comments (Ahmadinejad in political trouble at home)
Fox News ^ | February 26, 2007 | Unattributed

Posted on 02/26/2007 2:03:07 PM PST by Ben Mugged

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad faced a new round of sharp criticism at home Monday after he said Iran's nuclear program is an unstoppable train without brakes. Reformers and conservatives said such tough talk only inflames the West as it considers further sanctions.

The criticism came even as new signs have arisen that Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is growing discontented with Ahmadinejad, whom he is believed to have supported in 2005 presidential elections.

~snip~ On the eve of the gathering, Ahmadinejad struck a defiant tone. He told a group of clerics that Iran's nuclear ambitions were unstoppable. "The train of the Iranian nation is without brakes and a rear gear ... We dismantled the reverse gear and brakes of the train and threw them away some time ago," he said.

Those comments brought a hail of condemnations in Iran on Monday, not only from reformists who have long opposed Ahmadinejad, but also from conservatives who once backed him but now see his fiery rhetoric as needlessly provoking the West into confrontation.

"Why are you speaking a language that causes a person to be ashamed?" wrote the reformist daily Etemad-e-Melli, or National Confidence.

~snip~ The conservative daily Resalat chided Ahmadinejad, saying "neither weakness nor unnecessarily offensive language is acceptable in foreign policy."

"Our foreign policy must reflect the ancient Iranian civilization and rich Islamic culture of the Iranian nation. Therefore, delicacy ... rich diplomatic language and non-primitive policies must be part of a calculated combination to work," it said.

Ahmadinejad's critics have grown more vocal ever since his allies suffered a humiliating defeat in local elections in December. That vote was swept by reformists and anti-Ahmadinejad conservatives who said the president has spent too much time castigating the West and neglected dealing with Iran's faltering economy.

"Losing his support for his radical policies."
I'll believe it when I see his head on a stick.

I'm surprised no one in Iran has tried taking a couple shots at Ahmadimwittedass.

He's losing support because he's jeapordizing those policies, not because anyone disagrees with them. The Iranians would prefer someone who didn't antagonize the west while they continue to seek the same goals as Ahmadinejad.

Iran's nuclear program is an unstoppable train without brakes

All trains are stoppable. Trains without brakes stop in unpleasant ways.

The mullahs are probably are probably mad because he's actually saying what they are doing. The Ayatollah has probably told him, "Don't you know you are supposed to talk out of both sides of your mouth. You're supposed to say how you want peace and not want nukes, but then do it anyway."

Now this has got me thinking... if Ayatollah didn't want Iwannajihad to be so brazed, he wouldn't be. Perhaps there "nearness" to nukes is just a bluff to get concessions from the West. Look at the sweetheart deal North Korea is getting (for the second time.) Me thinkith if they were really that close, they'd be quiet until they actually got it. Then they'd show them off.

It's Mahmoud vs. Rafsanjani this spring and into the summer and until the Supreme Leader dies.

I consider Mahmoud to be this generation's Hitler, and as such he'll seize total power before long. Our Democrats and Europe's liberals will enable him to gain great power during the appeasement process.

Darius can only be beaten by Alexander. Not until a kick-@ss leader emerges in Europe will he be driven back.

Exactly. He's still in power. They're playing good cop/bad cop with us. Bottom line: You're correct.

BINGO! Old Ahmanutjob is letting the mask of sanity slip and allowing the raving lunatic core of the Iranian government's true colors shine through. I suspect that if he keeps this up before they get some functional nukes, he'll be summoned to an impromptu meeting with Allah.

Perhaps you are unaware of the armada of Naval and Air Force arms now arranged surrounding Admadinejad's Iran and ready to be unleashed by a kick-@ass leader of the United States.

No, I'm well aware. They are the best, but the next commander in chief will be very far from the best.

Agreed, but I don't think G.W. is going to keep all those carriers, B-1's and MEU's waiting around the Gulf for the next two years....and not keep his promise!
