You make a good point that a 'receipt' system would be subject to serious abuses, if the voter were able to take the receipt from the polling place. The usual scenario is that the receipt is retained in the polling precinct until moved to the central tabulation area.

What works best is for the voters to create their own ballots, and to observe the counts of those ballots.
