-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has his own views on what the United States should do about the war in Iraq -- namely, set a timetable for getting out.
But he's in Washington, D.C., this week telling federal lawmakers that whatever solution they ultimately choose, they should learn from California and stop their partisan bickering.
The American people, he said, don't like it.
"The key thing is that Congress and the White House get together rather than attacking each other continuously and always using this in a political way," the governor told moderator Bob Schieffer on the CBS show "Face the Nation" Sunday morning.
"The American people feel like we have to come to a resolution about this war, and both Congress and the White House should sit down and start working this out."
Schwarzenegger will be in Washington through Tuesday attending the National Governors Association conference and meeting with members of the California congressional delegation and the Bush administration to talk about the state's federal budget priorities.
While he's here, he is seeking to position himself as a national salesman for the approach to policymaking he calls "post-partisanship."
During a speech at the National Press Club today, the Republican governor is expected to talk about the compromises he reached with Democrats last year on issues such as global warming and the $43 billion in bonds for infrastructure projects that voters approved.
"I'm basically saying to Washington, 'Why can't you do the same thing?' " Schwarzenegger told Schieffer on Sunday.
Schwarzenegger said politicians "should elevate this whole discussion and ... really try to get along in Washington" rather than fighting over nonbinding resolutions critical of the president or whether Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York should apologize for voting to authorize the war as she campaigns for the Democratic presidential nomination.

LOL!
Shut up, Ahnold. Your act is getting old, and so are you.
The man is one step above an idiot. What's that, a moron?
Arnlod has become the biggest a*hole imaginable.
If 8 years of Democratic obstructionism produced a win for them in 06, how does it follow that pols should stop it and pretend to get along?
Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!! Ya know, I LIKE Arnold, but he has been overtaken by the California air or water or aliens!! What an idiot.
I agree that we are tired of the partisan bickering, but California is hardly the center of political peace in the universe.
The Lord help us!
At the risk of inviting a flaming by my fellow FReepers here, I need to say something...
Look at what Arnold the Governor has accomplished. He has successfully brought both parties to the center of the aisle and has managed to remain effective as a governor in a state that is mostly touted for it's tendency to lean left. The last republican governor from California who did this well was also a former actor turned politician.
Look...I am not espousing that we get all crazy with the cheeze wiz or anything (admittedly, the whole State of California strikes me as highly reminiscent of an insane assylum) but I think we should give credit where credit is due. Any California governor a hair's width right of center that is able to walk the political tightrope as successfully as he has deserves my grudging respect. What he lacks in staunch conservativism he makes up for in statesmanship. Some of you might disagree with me, but I think the only thing the Republican party would have gotten with a governor who swings too far right would be a public castigation, complete with dancing hippies and crowds of flower children bonged off their mind on sticky bud.
Moderation, as much as it galls me, is one of the only ways to reach out to some middle of the road Joes in Everystate, USA. It is difficult to teach sheep how to dance...we must take a patient approach and be happy when they realize that they're still just sheep...
I'm not going to flame you, in fact I agree with some of your points. But, from my distant vantage point, I see a governator who initially started out more to the right of center than his current position and, after his initial budget proposals were soundly smacked down by the voters, he shifted to the left and joined the tax 'n spend crowd. While I think that the jury could still be out on Arnold's leadership, I don't think he's another Ronald Reagan.
I smell some of that Kennedyesque "LOOK AT ME" in play here. Must have rubbed off on him. Does he not realize he the governor of a western state, and not the president or a cabinet secretary or anything even close?
Welcome to Free Republic.

What "success" are you referring to?
Good one, Radar. Classic!
(thx for the ping Incorrigible)
Wonder if Arnie's good "progressive" friend, Rudy Giuliani will soon be joining the Govinator in calling for a withdrawal schedule from Iraq. Wouldn't be surprised. In fact, Rudy`s remarks during that LarryLive interview from early February, were definitely not in solid support of the overall current Bush policy in Iraq.
successes? lolol
btw, Rush just ripped aRnold a new one.. wished he'd been as vocal in the REcall campaign as he is now re: The Gubinator.,, unlike some other talk show hosts who couldn't push him fast and hard enough.
He has done no such thing in fact his record is starting to make Californians pine for old Grey-out again.
He's not giving up party principles.. He's just serving the people...
The Trojan Horse aka The Austrian Oak is on fire of late.
Thanks for illuminating yourself and where you stand and who you stand with, Gub.
Other than the extreme liberals who control the Democrat party in California (i.e. they run the legislature in Sacramento and the city of San Francisco) can you elaborate on the "whole state" part of your comment?
Have you ever been to San Diego, or Orange County or Riverside, or San Bernardino? Have you been to Barstow, Bakersfield, Visalia, Fresno, Modesto? What about Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo? Have you been to the Antelope or Santa Clarita Valleys in Los Angeles County? What about Placer County, El Dorado County and the Sierra foothills? Northern California? Yuba City, Chico?
My guess is that you haven't.
Rush Limbaugh is raking RINOld across the coals this a.m.
What happened to all the Arnold Fan Club members???
the "McClintock can't win so I voted for Arnold" crowd is MIA...
Well, I won't say I told you so but back in 2003 Larry Elder & I told everyone that Arnold couldn't be a "social liberal and a fiscal conservative" at the same time; ya gotta pay for all those programs some how.
