Could it be that Giuliani is the man to beat on the GOP side?

It does not surprise me. I think Rudy will take California easily. I don't think that's a good thing, but I think it will happen if he runs through the primary.

More interesting to me would be the head to head numbers.

Isn't that a shocker?

Yesterday a web poll from portland (kerry 71.5%) was posted here. The question was "who should the republicans run in 2008". Not "who would you vote for". But "who do you (liberals) want to run up against"

Of course, rudy won!

Homeboy Hunter is stuck at 6% in his own State. Im sorry, he's a good Conservative Congressman, but if you are only in single digits in your home state, you are certainly toast. FReepers need to at some point consider electability rahter than pure idealogical testing.

If by head to head you mean Republican vs Democrat they didn't ask those questions in the survey.... It does have some interesting data.

Poll GOP survey data

              percent
Brownback 3.8
Gilmore .4
Giuliani 40.9
Huckabee 1.9
Hunter 5.9
McCain 17.4
Paul .7
Romney 10.5
Tancredo 3.9
Don't know/ 14.8
Undecided
Total 100.0

Doubtful. Hunter's polling at least 3% by now...

3%. My, I'm impressed:-)

I still maintain that Hunter is angling for a Secretary of Defense or State job.

California represents 55 electoral votes. Texas is second with 34. If California flips to Republican, it would take at least two other large states flipping to counteract it. These would most logically be Florida and Ohio. Texas would be unlikely to flip. There are several other large states that likely or possibly could flip to Republican. New York (31 votes) and New Jersey (15) would be most likely. If California and New York or New Jersey flip Republican, it is doubtful that the Democrats could flip enough states to counteract that.

In short, if NY goes Republican, the evening is over. Also, Giuliani has a strong enough machine in NY to counteract the typical "dead vote" bounce that goes to Democrats.

Like Texas, California is so large that Congressmen are seldom recognized outside of their home district, unless they have a national profile. Hunter seems to fit this mode. I doubt most Republicans in California have ever heard of Hunter, much less know he is a Californian. If he can rise in the California polls enough to get recognition and challenge for the lead, we should pay attention to him. If not, he's a nice guy without a chance.

Romney seems to be having trouble getting traction. Giuliani does not. I think McCain is a falling star. Gingrich isn't out of the gate, and Hunter seems to be a vanity candidate.

The press seems to be getting Clinton fatigue, which makes Obama their new darling. In terms of a news story, I think the press wants new faces. Hillary and the "First woman prez" storyline seem about as dated as the Geena Davis television series, "Commander in Chief."

Before getting to actual politics, I think Obama and Rudy are going to win the swimsuit competition. What happens after that? I don't know.

Immigration: the ultimate issue.

Until Americans see the writing on the American wall that immigration, both legal and illegal, is the critical issue that will determine whether we survive as a country or be swept into the dustbin of history, then, and only then, will it be all over.

Personally, even then I will fight it and defend America even when it is said that it is the "end," because when America goes, so will the rest of the Western World.

The rest of you can take your money and run.

Have a good night.

If he were to get it, he would do it very well.

And a good night to you as well.

You're on the money with regard to immigration. The political establishment (both parties) is culpable in its neglect of that issue. It will have to be taken on at the grass roots (electing border security candidates to Congress and local offices).
