Jordan queen urges Muslims to reject extremism

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia (AFP) - Jordan's Queen Rania on Sunday said Muslims must recognise that much of the terror in recent years has been committed in the name of Islam if they want to be taken seriously by the West.

"We are right to deplore Islamophobia and the branding of Muslims as terrorists," she told an annual economic forum in the Saudi Red Sea city of Jeddah.

"But we must face up to the horrible truth that many of the worst terrorist attacks in recent years have been committed by people who claim to be acting in the name of Islam," she said.

"We are right to question Western governments when their actions only make it easier for radicals to recruit new followers. But our moral authority depends on our willingness to reject the voices of extremism and violence in our midst," Rania said.

"It is hard to insist the West should embrace us as neighbours in the global village when across the Muslim world we are at war with ourselves, brother against brother -- in Iraq, Palestine, Lebanon and Afghanistan," she added.

The Jordanian queen, whose husband King Abdullah II is a close US ally, was the keynote speaker Sunday at the Jeddah Economic Forum, an annual gathering of business and political leaders billed by organisers as the Middle East's think tank.

Like other VIP guests in Saudi Arabia, she was exempted from wearing the long black abaya which is required for Saudi and foreign women in the conservative Muslim kingdom.

However, a dark glass-screen separated male and female delegates attending the forum in the same hall.

She certainly is a babe - no wonder she has little use for Islamofascism.

---The king and queen of Jordan are among the few responsible leaders in that part of the world.---

Resposible for maintaining their own wealth and power.

Anyone with wealth and power wants to retain it. The real questions are: What else do they stand for, and even if they stand for nothing else, how do they compare with the likely alternatives?

For what it's worth, I think the Jordanian royal couple are decent and constructive people. The fact that they are also rulers may offend a purist here and there, but purists really don't have much to contribute to serious discussions, especially when it comes to the Middle East.

"Doing her part to discourage Islamofascism by offering alternatives." Exactly. Beautiful, Westernized and partially Westernized Middle Eastern women are a significant part of whatever positive trends are occurring in the Middle East.

Unless I see something completely to the contrary, I wish this sexy, courageous lady all the best.

Can somebody explain to me why the Hashemite clan deserves to have its very own "Kingdom" to rule over but the Jewish state should not exist?

The Hashemites are fine, they have enough pedigree. it's those wahhabis who need to go, I'd be happy to see the hashemites spread their progressive ways to that benighted part of the world. They border each other so it ought to work fine.
