Because they're feeling insecure from all the firepower the bad guys have stolen from law abiding citizens. Since the gub'mint isn't interested in prosecuting or eliminating armed criminal enterprise, by default you're the source of the problem.

"Yes I just can't understand why our government needs military equipment to keep us inline." There wasn't supposed to be any need, at least it wasn't intended when our government was founded. In fact, the 2nd Amendment was to make certain we could keep the government inline.
