I am in and out of these trailers almost all day, five days a week and have never had a health issue. Our facility has had hundreds of these units deployed and I have never heard a complaint about respritory problems from any of our clients. Our biggest problem is that many people don't want to give these trailers back to us when their time is up.
I feel bad that some people might have health issues living in a FEMA trailer or any other small confined space but my experience seems to indicate that this is very, very rare. I think the media making a mountain out of a molehill. I also have to question the accuracy and competency of the newspaper story where the reporter can't even get FEMA's name correct. It's the Federal Emergency Management Agency, not the Federal Emergency Management Administration.
Everyone can participate. FEMA travel trailers are sold one at a time via online auction at http://gsaauctions.gov
On any given day, there will be 100+ travel trailers listed for auction.
The trailers themselves are located at various staging areas across the country from New Jersey to Florida and west to Texas. The majority of trailers are located in the southeast. Remember trailers can be expensive to haul so anyone interested in bidding should look to see what is closest to them first.
Successful bidders must be able to pay for their purchases within a couple business days and the trailers MUST be removed from the staging areas within 10 days NO EXCEPTIONS. So if you can abide by those rules, you can find some excellent deals on FEMA trailers via the GSA site.
All the trailers for sale have some type of problem (often nothing really serious) and there are basic units all the way up to very nice dealer slide outs.
