It's common courtesy.

Yes, and so is saluting the executive officer of the ship. I refused to salute mine, as he never once returned the salute. Once asked byt he captain why, I explained. The XO got his butt chewed, not me.

Common courtesies are for those who deserve them. I will grant them until the same is not returned or is no longer deserved. Fair enough?
