The problem for him is that if he positions himself to the left of Hillary he is another Howard Dean. You're right, and that's the scary part. Because of the constant drumbeat of propaganda about Iraq from the MSM that we've endured for the last few years, a Howard Dean-type would probably fare much better this time around. Dean himself was well on his way to the 'Rat nomination until the 'Aaaaarrrrrggghhhhh' incident in Iowa: a mistake that Algore's handlers will make sure that he doesn't repeat.

Yeah, Ann Coulter wrote at the time that the Democrat establishment had decided Dean was not electable, that Kerry was, and communicated this to the news media. When Howard screamed the media flooded the airwaves with it as if he had committed a cardinal sin and lined up behind Kerry. The deal was that all Kerry had to do was act presidential and the media would take care of the rest of the campaign. Of course as soon as Kerry gave that absurd, Vaudevillian salute and said, "Reporting for duty," at the convention he broke his part of the deal and the media was running damage control for him until November.

Leftists like Algore and John Kennedy are all about taxation of property and government control of property.
Government entrenched elitists see themselves as the government aristocracy. They believe they "rule" over the sheeple as a matter of right.
John Kennedy wants an ADA style of attorney fee generating "mill" where private activists can sue private citizens for court ordered attorney fees without end. Where judges make the environmental rules without the need of legislators.
