Cheney won't take back Pelosi comment

Vice President Dick Cheney refused Friday to take back his charge that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (news, bio, voting record)'s opposition to President Bush's Iraq war buildup is playing into the hands of the al-Qaida terrorist network.

"If you're going to advocate a course of action that basically is withdrawal of our forces from Iraq, then you don't get to just do the fun part of that, that says, 'We'll, we're going to get out,' and appeal to your constituents on that basis," Cheney said.

The vice president had voiced the same criticism of Pelosi earlier this week during a visit to Japan, and the California Democrat accused the vice president of questioning her patriotism, saying she was going to call President Bush directly with her complaint.

"I hope the president will repudiate and distance himself from the vice president's remarks," Pelosi said. She ended up talking with White House chief of staff Josh Bolten instead of Bush.

The long-distance quarrel began in Tokyo, where Cheney earlier this week used an interview to criticize Pelosi and Rep. John Murtha (news, bio, voting record), D-Pa., over their plan to place restrictions on Bush's request for an additional $93 billion for the Iraq war to make it difficult or impossible to send 21,500 extra troops to Iraq.

During Friday's interview in Sydney, Cheney said, "I'm not sure what part of it is that Nancy disagreed with. She accused me of questioning her patriotism. I didn't question her patriotism. I questioned her judgment."

"You also have to be accountable for the results. What are the consequences of that? What happens if we withdraw from Iraq?," he said. "And the point I made and I'll make it again is that al-Qaida functions on the basis that they think they can break our will. That's their fundamental underlying strategy, that if they can kill enough Americans or cause enough havoc, create enough chaos in Iraq, then we'll quit and go home. And my statement was that if we adopt the Pelosi policy, that then we will validate the strategy of al-Qaida. I said it and I meant it."

Asked if he was willing to take back his criticism of Pelosi, Cheney replied, "I'm not backing down."

I hope the President extends Cheney's remarks and rips her a new one, but he's too much of a gentleman for that.

And that passivity is a major reason why he's been reduced to the dire and desperate circumstances in which he finds himself. So sad, and so unnecessary...

Love it!  Love it!  I love how Vice President Cheney talks straight, is eloquent and calm (yet clear and blunt) in the process, explains his rationale clearly, and stands behind his words.

Lol- No way should he appologize- Hillary is going to get quite nasty in the coming months, and she'll NEVER apologize for anything she says or what her staff may say.

In fact- perhaps the Reps should be going overseas and telling it like it is to foreign countries- that the far left dems are spinelss maggots that haven't got any patriotism for our country and want to tear this great nation down from the inside out- Do to the dems what Kerry, Nelson, Carter do 5to the president! See how they like it- Call them traitors.

"I didn't question her patriotism. I questioned her judgment."

Bingo!! Pelosi is merely following the tired 'Rat cliche of screaming "stop questioning my patriotism!" whenever anyone makes a serious point about judgment, accountability, and results in foreign policy. The Demagogues want to advocate defeat and surrender at every turn yet pretend that they should be entrusted with foreign policy for the USA and the free world.

The difference between the Administration and the Congress is that W views al Qaeda as a threat that we need protection from.

The Congress views W as a greater threat than al Qaeda, and that we need protection from him.

The "take it back" phrase is reminiscent of kindergarten, isn't it? Our tax dollars at work.

What you say is chilling...It's like the third grade in corporate America. Adulthood has left the building. :^(

Here's my question for Speaker Pelosi:

If, when VP Cheney criticizes your Iraq plan, he is questioning your patriotism, but when YOU criticize the President's Iraq plan, how do you conclude that you are NOT questioning HIS patriotism?

And a follow-up: Why do you think it should be permissible for you to practice this obvious double standard?

I agree with you completely.

Not only do they demand we actuate the Al-qada strategy, they want to do it in a manner that will cause the most bloodshed and death to our brave soldiers.

They want to cut down on the funding to provide the ammo, armor, and training as well as the personnel to prosecute this mission thereby cutting back the very means by which the soldiers defend themselves.

They realize that the casualties being suffered now are hurting us but not badly enough to cause enough of us to demand we surrender (the dems best case scenario) so they plan to ramp up the death count to achieve their agenda.

Sick sick sick treasonous b**tards.
