TRENTON, N.J. - Junk foods got expelled from schools today, when Governor Corzine signed a bill implementing new school nutrition standards.
The new law bars the sale or distribution of foods with minimal nutritional value in public school cafeterias and vending machines during school hours. Federal law defines such foods as those with less than five percent per serving of eight specified nutrients.
Under the law, vending machines will not be allowed to contain foods or soft drinks listing sugar as the first ingredient, or those with excess fat or saturated fat.
"It's for the Children" legislation.
Ha. Same stuff in our schools in Fox Valley in Wi.
Here's the joke. Machines do carry milk "Chugs" tons of sugar, fat. Also "sport" drinks full of sugar. But no diet soda. that would be bad....

How'd this crap get in the schools in the first place? It wasn't there when I went. They might as well go ahead and put video poker machines in there.
I don't think they should have vending machines in schools at all. And since the taxpayer is paying for the majority of the lunch cost in any cafeteria (all the labor, for example, irrespective of the ingredients), there's no reason the taxpayer should pay for crappy food on the front end and obesity-related illness on the back end.
We've run camps for as many children as use an elementary school cafeteria. It's not any more expensive or more difficult to serve a reasonably nutritious meal.
If I had to guess, I'd bet that someone in the vending machine business made a political contribution and won some kind of contract. At least that's how it usually works in New Jersey.
I totally agree with you. I don't know about the middle and high schools, but there are no vending machines in the elementary schools around here.
There certainly weren't when I was in school. I'm pretty sure I've seen drink machines in the high schools here, when we've held Girl Scouts events there.
And there sure weren't any when I was in school either. I was at the HS a few weeks ago for a GS event, and to be perfectly honest, I don't remember if there were any machines or not.
I remember the vending machines in college. There was ONE on campus that held Tab, and about a dozen girls there everyone morning before their first class!
The problem is that all school lunch food I've ever had is basically inedible. At least a vending machine used to provide me with something to keep my blood sugar from dropping.
Kids might be fat because they can't eat their school lunch, so they chow down when they get home. Then they pick at their supper, and eat late at night. Not eating all day at school sets up an unnatural eating cycle. Vending machines full of sugar aren't the answer, but I don't know what is.

Now they only have junk education.
Same with our schools, although they did get rid of the sports drinks last month.
We werent fat when i was a kid, no obesity. we had greasy fish sticks and tator tots for lunch and in HS we had candy vending machines. maybe kids need more P.E.
In my sons school they take 15-20 min of each class to read (including thier PE time)
As I said above, it's possible to provide decent institutional meals; I know because our family has done it for Scout camp. However, there is still the problem of the children who refuse to eat anything but junk. There's very little a school (or camp) can do about that; it has to be dealt with by parents.
From what I hear from other parents, another problem is that the students aren't given adequate time to eat at the lunch period.
