WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House defended Donald Rumsfeld on Tuesday from criticism from Republican Sen. John McCain (news, bio, voting record) that he was one of the worst U.S. defense secretaries ever for his handling of the Iraq war.
McCain, one of President George W. Bush's key allies in the U.S. Congress on Iraq, is running for his party's nomination to be president in 2008.
"I think that Donald Rumsfeld will go down in history as one of the worst secretaries of defense in history," the Arizona senator and former Vietnam War veteran said on the campaign trail in South Carolina on Monday.
The White House backed Rumsfeld but was careful not to criticize McCain in doing so.
"We think Donald Rumsfeld was an enormously consequential and effective secretary of defense and somebody who led to the transformation of the Department of Defense. Senator McCain holds a different point of view," said White House spokesman Tony Snow.
Rumsfeld, the second-longest serving defense secretary, was widely blamed for the U.S. failure to bring stability to Iraq amid growing public discontent over the war.

That is not the point. War is not a science. It's not like geometry and trogonometry where there are theorems, vectors, tangents, and intercepts where you can prove a result.
Hence the expression, "The Art of War."
Only the reflection in the mirror.

McCain isn't fit to shine Rumsfeld's shoes. Rumsfeld is a Great American.....McCain is a traitor to his sworn oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States of America.
Just what the hell does he figure he's going to gain by stabbing Rummy in the back?

I would be seriously concerned about the stability of this guy in the Oval Office.
McCain will go down in history as one of the worst Senators.
McCain is heartedly endorsed by Phil Gramm today
in the Wall Street Journal. After reading the article
and often watching them both on the Senate floor and
on the Sunday shows...I have changed my mind, I am
inclined to agree with Phil Gramm..hence support John
McCain...Jk

Yes, and it is amazing just HOW MANY are on the Senate list of reprobates, treasonists, back-stabbers, corrupt, criminal...and Washington wonders why the people have no faith in anything they do or say.
Come out, come out wherever you are McCain stooges!
Sorry EEE, you'll have to get your cheap sex elsewhere.
Hi sanjacjake. Nice to see another independent thinker here. I'm not sure who I'll vote for yet, but McCain's stock is rising in my book. Be sure to take a look at NR OnLine's Corner--more and more conservatives are becoming more impressed with JM.
I also hope McCain is history. I never really could figure him out, but if he is nominated, he will not get my vote after what he said about Secretary Rumsfeld. I always admired him for his service in VietNam, but these days he's simply erratic.
Don't forget Pootie Putin.
I think his "bad choices" have also shown up by the "tell all" books written by some of his ex-aides and Cab. members..
I can't hold it against him too much...I have had a bad habit of befriending the wrong people in my life.
There are so many posts here, including yours, that can only really be answered with the phrase, "yeah, right. (yawn)"
Since when can't Rumsfeld be criticised? If he was so darn good, why's he gone? I respect the job Rumsfeld did but truth be told he couldn't do the job. He made big mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes during war, but everyone's got to pay the price.
McCain's been critical of Rumsfeld for a long time for not sending more troops. This is nothing new.
And just so you know, I think McCain is a hero and a patriot.
McCain was a one-man propaganda ministry on behalf of terrorist rights vis-a-vis abu Ghraib--as much "torture" as my college fraternity hazing.
For two years McCain would not shut up, giving aid and comfort to the enemy and crippling the President's attempts to fight the war at home and abroad.
I don't recall McCain remarking so viciously at the time of Donald Rumsfeld's departure.
McCain has been a back-stabber in his epic rehabilitation from his Lincoln Savings & Loan disgrace, using our First Amendment as his and Red Russ Feingold's toilet paper.
There's no way this wreckage is anything but debris in the ash heap of history.
Tony Snow is so good with his words and responses.
I am from the old guys..who served under Admiral
McCain, John's Grandfather. At this time in our Nation's
history, I think McCain would be the logical choice,
but the posts in FR seem to attract the naysayers for
him...but most of the posts about any Presidential
candidate is about the same. All I can say is...do a
little reading and stay away fom NYTimes and the usual
suspects....JK
Knock yourself out.
McAinal is just trying to get a little of that shrinking rotten pie of American Haters, who fancy themselves as Republicans.
