FDR may very well have prevented a communist revolution in the U.S.
FDR was responsible for the cold war. His Keynsian policies
created the massive welfare state. His fiscal and monetary
policies deepened the great depression.
IMO a poor President. No way should Roosevelt eclipse
Reagan.
That is the biggest bull I have ever heard since Bill Clinton last opened his mouth.
I don't think so. If anything, Roosevelt was either blind to the issue of Communism in America, or was tacitly complicit. He certainly was aware of the allegations against Alger Hiss that did not come to a head until after WWII, but he was told about Alger Hiss and dismissed it with a wave of his and an insult to the bearer of that information.
There was never any real threat of a Communist revolution in the US - there was never even a single local Communist-led uprising in any American community between the wars, let alone a national revolution.
The closest we came to such an incident was the Bonus Army - and they were dealt with in pretty short order, with general public approval.
It was during FDR's administration that Communists began to infiltrate the government, as documented in books such as Witness by Whittaker Chambers.
Actually, I think Joseph McCarthy was nearly single-handedly responsible for keeping communism from getting a real foothold in this country.
McCarthy made it a shame and embarrassment to be a communist. It stopped being something people bragged about.
For what he did, thanks from his country have never been extended, and he has been reviled by both the left and the right, when in retrospect, he was spot on about the problem of communists in the government.
The Venona Files vindicated him completely. But his name is still trotted out with malicious overtones towards authoritarianism and fascism.
He deserves to have his reputation and name not only returned to him, but imbued with gratitude and respect.
No...he just put it off for a while. It is alive and well in today's politics I assure you.
Give me a break! Do you have evidence for this revisionist claim? The Communists received about 1 percent of the vote in 1932, the second worst year of the depression. They did even worse in 1936. Of course, I agree that FDR wanted people to think that he "saved" capitalism....but that doesn't make it true. Interestingly, FDR was elected on a platform that called for cuts in government spending and accused Hoover of being a spendthrift, though, of course, your hero was lying when he said those things.
