$5000! Wow. She could have paid for a nice vacation to the reservation and bought a couple of hundred cartons and smuggled them home.

My father was once caught for buying booze in New Jersey (Philipsburg) and transporting to Easton, PA. He got ticketed. He worked in Pburg and there was a liquor store right at the bridge on the way home. The PA cops watched him go in to the store and drive over and bam! Busted. (The tax was lower in NJ.)

I've been surprised that the Mafia hasn't gotten more involved in selling untaxed smokes, but I guess the Internet buying is a way around the Mob.

I used to smoke, and quit when it was about a dollar a pack for generic. I would surely have gotten involved in illegal buying and transport. Smokes are about 5 dollars a pack now in Cal..

It's a sick tax. I just hope I can find something that only the health nazis love someday so I can tax it to high heaven. I want revenge on them.

You know, if you're poor, smoking might be one of the few consistent and friendly pleasures you might have. It was for me at times. So much for compassionate liberalism. Hammer the poor and make them pay.

I remember the first time my father came and visited me in KC from NY. I guess that this was back around 1992. He had never seen a "Wholesale Club," and was AMAZED by the prices on cigarettes. IIRC, there was about a $10 difference in the cost of a single carton. He bought 10 cases of cartons, and we UPS'ed them back to NY!
