Some time later Rumsfeld made a trip to Alaska, supposedly, to check on the progress of the missile defense program. He made a side trip to meet privately with some angry 172nd family members. Historians will have to figure out what happened between then and Nov 7th, but it wouldn't surprise me to find out Rumsfeld made up his mind to leave well before election day.
