Red County Interview: Bill Simon On Rudy Giuliani
Orange County Register Blog ^ | February 14, 2007 | Bill Simon Interview

Posted on 02/16/2007 7:53:31 PM PST by BunnySlippers

Bill Simon: I think Rudy will make an extraordinary President. I don't know of anyone I'm in 100% agreement with respect to every issue -- even my fellow conservatives. So I'm not troubled if I don't agree with someone on every issue as long as they demonstrate very strong leadership qualities, which Rudy does, and a very strong sense of public service, which Rudy does, and a very firm agenda in areas that are important to me and in a way in which he can execute -- all of which Rudy does.

When you think about the priorities he's expressed -- things like national security -- I don't know of anyone better in the public arena now who can handle issues of national security better than Mayor Giuliani.

And when you talk about issues related to fiscal conservatism, which are important to Rudy, I don't know anybody in the public arena who has cut taxes 23 times as Rudy did when he was mayor of New York; who has shrunk the size of government, which he did when he was mayor of New York; reduced the welfare rolls by over 50 percent, which he did when he was mayor of New York. And that's not going into reducing crime by 65% and many other things that he did while mayor in a situation that, before he became mayor, was widely regarded as the second toughest job in American politics, and was widely regarded as an ungovernable situation.

I think he did an extraordinary job as Mayor of New York in a Democrat-controlled environment, and being able to function as a fiscal conservative in that Democrat-controlled environment is an amazing achievement.

Cunningham: How long have you known Mayor Giuliani?

We've got to put a STOP to this mongrel RINO tide, NOW, before it's too late.

Good god, we've got to put a STP to Hillary NOW!

can see the essential need for someone with strong leadership

As Rick Brookhiser (another strong conservative) said back in December promoting a possible Giuliani candidacy, "You can either vote for a leader. Or you can vote for someone else."

The hell I didn't read the article oh Miss Bunny Slippery Socialist. Rudy sucks and it's hard to believe anybody here on this "conservative forum" would promote him.

...look at how Americans voted for Clinton -- twice. Americans pick from the middle. That's why candidates in primary races tact to the left or right -- then to the middle in general elections.

I really don't like your attitude friend...you tend to attack the messenger rather than just arguing your position. I detect a bit of hostility. Someone need a hug?

There are 2 showstopper issues for me:

1) The WoT and OIF
2) Illegal aliens and the border

Why should we get excited about a candidate that doesn't meet such a basic standard? And so Rudy does not cut the mustard on this score. I won't vote for him in the primaries.

But I would vote for him in the general election, if he were the Republican nominee.

...but I also can see beyond my narrow views to see what will result from a Hillary presidency.

Republican/conservative narrow viewpoints may have played a role in aiding the Democratic party to gain the majority in Congress. Those who stayed away from the polls or refused to back Republicans in the last election needed a wider screen in order to get the big picture. Maybe?

Count me among those who are disgusted with the mindset of the Bush administration and our "supposed" representatives in Congress. They practically invited the Dems to take over because they arrogantly ignored the strongly-held principals of their constituents.

If we are to maintain a political party which represents the conservative thinking of this country, we're going to have to work within the party, if that's possible. The alternative is to wave a white flag and hand the country over to the leftists, socialists, and eventually, the Muslims. And not only our country, but that of our children, grandchildren, ad infinitum.

...you mean you think every Californian is liberal?...

Just wondering. What is the percentage of Californians registered as Democrats and what percentage is Republican?

One would think the government not interfering with a woman's choice at first blush would be a conservative value.

One doesn't have the right to choose to murder an innocent human being. Personhood is the issue surrounding abortion.

Regardless, the issue is a conservative one because Roe is the ulimtate act of judicial activism. Conservatives believe the people through their elected representatives should decide the issue, not a group of judges acting as dictators.

I don't care how many politicans worship at the altar of the Republican party and are willing to sell out conservative principles. I care about the issues and conservative movement and Giullani would be destructive to both.

Can't you think for yourself and see that Giullani is a liberal on an unacceptably large number of issues?

"However, I believe in a woman's right to choose."

Please tell me the names of the founding fathers that wrote such a right into the constitution. And please show me the clause or amendment in the constitution that declares a woman's right to kill her unborn child. The people of the several states saw abortion as evil and had laws written to prohibit it.

"Is Roe bad? I think that's up to the court to decide."

Wrong again. It's not a constitutional right. It's not up to the court to decide. For example, murder is not a constitutional right. Murder is evil. All states have laws against murder. The people have decided against murder. Abortion is also evil. The people had laws on their state books against abortion. The court would have no business overruling the will of the people on murder and it has no business overruling the will of the people on abortion. Roe vs Wade should be overturned. It's up to the people to decide.

Simon was eating breakfast with Rudy the morning of 9/11.

I did not know that. Thanks.

All of these men have been in or around politics for a very long time, in the trenches, in the real world. They understand what's at stake, and how one must pick one's battles.

> Bill Simon staunchly Conservative!

His stated positions certainly are.

> Ran unsuccessfully for CA gov.

Yes, and this bugs me. Davis was perhaps the worst governor in California history, and 2002 was a bleak, bleak time for us. He had huge negatives, he completely mishandled the energy in California resulting in serious crises-- all the stuff that made the recall election possible. And Simon lost to that miserable incompetent, because his campaign was about as bungled as it could be. It was a nightmare. So forgive me if I question his political strategies and savy.

> Simon was eating breakfast with Rudy the morning of 9/11.

Yes, and he also served under Rudy as Assistant United States Attorney in NY in the late 80s. This is actually not a plus for Simon's recommendation of Rudy in my book, because friends will often blindly overlook the relevant negatives on the balance sheet (like, oh, all the social liberalism).

Listen: I *want* to like Rudy. Honestly I do. However, it's not just a single issue but many. I *love* that he's fiscally conservative and strong against terror. But everything else is as liberal as Pelosi, and his public philandering and divorces makes me question his judgement-- are we ready for more "Clinton values" in the highest office in the land? And do you think the MSM will leave such a scandalous past alone? Fuggeddaboutit.

Don't worry, Rudyphiles-- I'll vote (holding my nose) for your boy against Hitlery should he win the primaries. But I will fight for someone else until then. Sorry.

> Rush said he's not going to carry the liberal Republicans water for them any more.
> I don't think, and I'm guessing, he'll have much trust in a NYC liberal pretending to run as a Conservative. Rush is too smart for that.

I'm a long-time Rush listener, I love listening to him and I agree with a lot of what he says, but the man hungers to be an insider and I don't think his water-carrying days are over by a long shot. Every time he brags about lighting up a cheroot with his high-powered buddies it reminds me of this.

If "conventional wisdom" (ugh) in the GOP starts breaking for Rudy, even in absence of primaries, you know Rush will start downing fine liquor with his old buddy Rudy in the smoky club rooms where the high rollers kanoodle. And then the next day you'll hear, "Ya know, the GOP is a big tent... social issues aren't so important when there's a war on... us conseratives need to be more 'open minded'... Rudy's our guy..."

Mark my words. I will *bet* on this.
