It's been nearly ten years since the Cupertino-based company dabbled in the realm of sub-notebooks,

Why is it that HP never gets respect?

I own three HP75 computers with built-in best BASIC ever created, double precision math and HPGL connectivity for use in everything from data-logging to inventory control, with dozens of available peripherals.

I used it for complex engineering problems much longer than a decade ago.
And they are sub-compacts.

Looking for advice. Am a senior citizen with extremely limited tech ability. I can log on and check email. That's about it.

Would a sub note book be a good fit as far as portability is concerned and ease of use considering I am now on dial up and Windows 98?

Apple's notebooks are almost at a price point I feel is worth it.
I was looking at a coworker's machine last week and he was running Windows 2003 server, Linux and the Apple O/S X.
Pretty awesome.

Have you considered a Commodore 64?

If you are a senior citizen, I would bet that the small size of a sub notebook's monitor/screen would drive you nuts. My mother has a small notebook (Sony Vaio) and it is so small it drive me nuts. Maybe you'd want to get an iMac or a Mac Mini with a big monitor.

Nope. Is it a small laptop? Is it relatively affordable, meaning less than $1,000? Is it very different than my Dell?

I have a hard time learning new tricks.

Because PC owners don't involve themselves in slavish devotion to brand names.

Really? I've met some Dell customers like that.

Thank you. I have a BIG monitor on my desktop and I love it. It's just that our home office is down some steep steps and I'd like to have the ability to use the computer on the main level of our house.

Daughter has a Sony Vaio full sized lap top and it's not too bad on my eyes but the price is a bit much right now.

The last thing I want to do is make a mistake.

You've been a big help, much appreciated.

I like my Dell machines, but I'd buy HP if the price were better.

Then maybe you want a laptop (or the Mini) and a couple of docking stations or monitor/keyboard setups, so you can just grab the computer and move it around as needed. If that's the case, even the smaller sub-notebooks would probably do what you want and be lighter to carry around.

Being called a sub-notebook would suggest greater portability and as far as ease of use, if you go to OS X from Win98 you're gonna be blown away.

Ain't it!

But the Mac's don't have any market share so they can't possible be any good. /sarc

>onboard NAND flash

Flash memory has
a limited lifetime but
I'd try out this thing

if the price is low.
I like a full OS that
I can tote around.

I hear that. For PCs, I often just buy parts and assemble them myself. The last 2 PCs I bought assembled didn't actually have a brand that I can recall. I love my MacBook Pro though. It's a great machine. The next laptop I get will probably be a PC. I think I might buy a used Dell. I might see if I can go straight to the source and just acquire a Clevo from somewhere. I want to run Ubuntu on the thing.

Parallels is awesome. The next version will be released in a few weeks, or sooner. WOW!
