S.F. reviews back pay to Newsom aide - Woman in affair with mayor got $10,154 after leaving post

Ruby Rippey-Tourk, the woman who had an affair with San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, received $10,154 in unexplained retroactive pay after leaving her job as his commission appointments secretary, public records show.

City Attorney Dennis Herrera said Thursday that privacy laws prohibit the city from explaining the basis for the payment or discussing hundreds of hours in paid leave that Rippey-Tourk also collected.

In a written statement, Herrera said he is reviewing the payments to ensure they are proper "under city laws and procedures," adding that his office would have no further comment before that examination is concluded.

Rippey-Tourk is the wife of Alex Tourk, the mayor's former deputy chief of staff, who moved on to run Newsom's re-election campaign before resigning last month after learning of the affair.

Newsom publicly apologized for the affair and betrayal of his political aide Tourk after it was reported by The Chronicle.

After the affair with the mayor, which took place in 2005, Rippey-Tourk attended rehabilitation for substance abuse in the late spring and early summer the next year.

City payroll records show Rippey-Tourk received a $10,154 check that a deputy city controller says paid Rippey-Tourk after the fact for a 10-week period last summer while she was on leave from her city job. Due to privacy restrictions, officials said they could not disclose the justification for the retroactive payment.

A spokesman for Rippey-Tourk said the retroactive payment was for leave time donated by other city employees under a policy that allows such a transfer in cases of catastrophic illness.

Pretty good looking for a 50 year old, except she's 34.

Wow. My wife is the same age as she is, but my wife looks half her age.

That is one hard face.

She got 1080 hours of leave which is 130 days over 3 years or 43 days of leave a year. Didn't get that much leave in the military.

Sounds like it is above board to me.

San Francisco Mayor Says Negative Reaction to His Affair & Alcohol Problem Unfair

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom said he cannot understand why people are so upset with him. News of Newsome’s sexual affair with his former appointments secretary, Ruby Rippey-Tourk, wife of former Newsom adviser Alex Tourk has sparked criticism and calls for his resignation. Unsurprisingly, the criticism has not been ameliorated by Newsome’s announcement that he is going to undergo treatment for alcoholism.

“I don’t see what all the fuss is about,” Newsome complained. “President Clinton had lots of affairs, but he’s ‘Mr. Cool’ with the media. Senator Kennedy got drunk, drove off a bridge and killed a young woman he was having an affair with and nobody’s calling for him to step down. I’m no worse then either of these guys.”

Former President Clinton shrugged off Newsome’s remarks as “sour grapes.” “The man is obviously jealous,” Clinton said. “He’s had one affair and he thinks he can compare himself to me? I’m America’s favorite ex-president. My biography’s a best seller. Everywhere I go, women throw themselves at me. Newsome’s what, mayor of ‘Gay Town, USA?’ He’s not even in my league.”

Senator Kennedy was not as forgiving. “Mary Jo’s been dead more than 30 years,” Kennedy said. “It’s ‘old news.’ I’ve moved on with my life. It’s mean-spirited for Mayor Newsome to bring this up at such a late date. It shows a real lack of decency on his part.”

Wouldn't that depend upon what the "leave" was for?

$10,154 for two "private sessions" is pretty cool. Bet the SF Coyote Union is reconfiguring their fees.

Well, at least she wasn't having a sex change operation. This is progress.

I'm wondering if those in SF who said it was no big deal will now change their mind.
