This is one of the most intelligent analyses I have read. Land really understands social conservatives; Giuliani supporters don't have a clue.
Social liberals in the Republican party don't have a clue.
Many social conservatives would vote Democrat if not for life, gun and gay issues.
Many are working class union people, many are not crazy about the war, many wouldn't mind paying more taxes to improve the lives of their neighbors, many would support socialized medicine, many would favor more protectionism.
As unattractive as these positions might be to the "pure conservatives" , Republicans can't win a national election without this group.
Social Conservatives really don't ask for much? Yet, they're derided by factions within the party.
If the Democrats disparaged any diverse member of their coalition they wouldn't stand a chance. But, they know better.
