Earlier this week, I did a phone interview with Congressman Duncan Hunter, a former Chairman of the Armed Services Committee and a former ranger in Vietnam, who is one of the Republican contenders vying for the presidency in 2008. What follows is an edited transcript of our conversation.
PS: I can tell you from talking to Hunter that he is VERY PASSIONATE about building a fence on the border and about any and all things related to the military. He also seems to have a pretty good sense of humor.
John Hawkins: Talk to us about the war in Iraq. Give us a broad overview of what you think we should be doing right now.
Duncan Hunter: Well, the US is following in the same basic pattern that we've followed for 60 years in expanding freedom around the world. (The first step is) that we stand up a free government and we've done that in Iraq.
The second step is we stand up a military capable of protecting that government and the third step is the US leaves. We followed that pattern in Japan and the Philippines and Salvadore and our own hemisphere and it's been the traditional and the effective method of this country spreading freedom around the world.

Didn't see any mention of the 2nd A or RKBA. He should make a point of bringing it up if the interviewer doesn't. I'd support this guy's candidacy and if he could get the nomination, I'd vote for him in the election. Can't say that about too many other GOP runners
Thanks
Look - Duncan Hunter has little chance in 08'.. that old Duke Cunningham case will kill him - he was there - big time.
That said - the man is tough - we need him in this race.
I like what I read. Not merely the positions, but the thought processes.
Hunter/Bolton, how does that sound?
I don't think so. Is he under investigation?
Not to my knowledge - however.
Cunningham and Hunter were both Vietnam veterans and decorated.
I worry that such close ties would allow one not to know what the other was up to..
Pure speculation - but I worry about it - back in 2002 the San Diego press was not on Hunter's trail.
I will leave it there - I don't want to pretend to know anything.
I'm not gonna lose any sleep over it.
Right - well said.
Oh, you can bet they'll try to bring it up, but if there's one thing I liked in what I read about him early on, it's that when an allegation is made, he tackles it head on and stomps it into the ground. The Cunningham connection is so tenuous that any Dem bringing it up will only be asking for a tenfold smackdown about their own shenanigans.
Did you read the whole thing? Granted, he didn't address every conceivable issue; however, he did verbally slap the NEA.
Sorry, make that the D of E
Didn't I see him on C-SPAN this weekend saying he is opposed to the troop surge in Iraq, that deposing Hussein and setting up a democratic government is enough? Is he or is he not supporting Bush in this effort in Iraq?
I am beginning to like this man more and more.
It is a legitimate reason for vetting Hunter on this subject, given Cunningham's proximity.
Wow, I'm impressed.
Took him, what - 27 years to do so?
I think you need to pay more attention to what you are watching. Hunter has been steadfast in his support of the war and plays hardball with the Dems - he's the guy who engineered forcing a vote on whether to withdraw from Iraq last year, and made the Dems put up or shut up. Only three Dems voted for withdrawal.
The GOP can learn some lessons here.
The word "Ranger" was all I needed...
"I will never leave a fallen comrade to fall into the hands of the enemy and under no circumstances will I ever embarrass my country."
