The Iranians still fly and operate their F-14. They have invested a great deal of money in reverse engineering parts to keep those birds flying. I've served in the region and the Iranian U.S. supplied fleet of F-14, F-4 and F-5s are still very much up and running.

Steyr wanted to sell in the US market, but stupid US import laws prevented it. Reality amounted to "let us sell in the USA, or we'll have to fill the Iranian order." As the US wouldn't budge, the company had to do business elsewhere.

Austria has no beef with Iran.

When you tell a foreign company (which needs sales to survive) "you can't sell here, and we don't want you to sell there", they tend to ignore you and go to where the buyers are.

A pity, as I want a Steyr .50!

well iran is one of the most important trade partners of austria. i think austrians officials are aware of the nuclear programm of iran ( whitch i can not support) but austria is also exporting other goods. so i think it is good that there are also some people in the world that can read between the lines and have an opinion that grew on normal homan intelligence!

If I recall correctly (I may be wrong,,GASP)that it was a Austrian firm IG Farben that produced and sold the gas (Zyklon B)that the Germans used in the Gas chambers (Auschwitz) during WWII.. their defense after the war was, yes we sold it, but we were not responsible for how it was used.
