Thunderous booms were heard across Baghdad as US and Iraqi forces launched a major operation in a Sunni insurgent-infested neighborhood on Thursday, a spokesman said.
Iraqi Army Brig. Qassim Moussawi, spokesman for the Iraqi commander of the Baghdad security plan, said a joint US-Iraqi force had moved into the southern neighborhood of Dora.
The statement came a day after thousands of US troops swept house-to-house through mostly Shiite areas near a militia stronghold in northeastern Baghdad in the opening phase of the long-awaited Baghdad security crackdown.

Saw alot of cool stuff at Edwards.
We had a stealth fighter crash before the stealth fighter existed. They only flew at night. We were told they were A-7s. They cleaned up all the wreckage or so they thought. A week later, a boy scout troop came up to one of the gates with a big chunk of chard honeycomb wing.
One of the coolest was a SR-71 taking off at night. The flame out of the engine was amazing.
We're under a supersonic corridor here in SE Tennessee. For several years they were testing the YF-22 up here. There for a while we were getting sonic booms every day, sometimes from both the chase plane and the YF-22. I'd never have known it was the YF-22 had it not been for the local news reports. They fly so high that you can't even make them out in binoculars.
One day I was standing at the back door of my hangar with the man door partly open. We suddenly got a sonic boom much bigger than the YF-22 I had become accustomed to. The shock wave knocked stuff off the walls and slammed the door in my face. I just happened to have my binoc's by the back door. I looked up and could plainly make out a white B-1 (NASA?), being chased by what appeared to be a white T-38.
About a month later I was up flying my sailplane on the ridge here. I experienced a sonic boom that must have been amplified by the hollow tail boom of my glider. My first thought was a bird strike and I fully expected to look out and see part of the plane missing. I almost reached for the canopy release knobs, then I looked up and saw the telltale contrails coming up from the south (Dobbins AFB) and realized it was just the F-22 again. That one scared the bejesus out of me.
Yes, next to the Dean for President sticker. (Saw one this morning!)
I know it's not PC to just go in there and kick some a$$ but if you do and you win, people WILL get over it.
How about the Kerry Edwards stickers from 04? I still see so many of those. Some now cut the Kerry part off.
Mostly what I see is the W with the slash thru it. My blood pressure always goes up. I HAVE to pass them.
Several years ago my wife and I were on one of Nevada's back roads going from Battle Mountain down to highway 50 and as we topped a ridge, a flight of A-6's overflew us at what we thought was low enough to rip off the air conditioners on the roof. We stopped and watched as they used us as a target for several minutes...we waved and just laughed it was so great.
Couldn't hear each other for an hour...one of the most memorable things that ever happened to us.
I built the Cellular One system in 18 counties of east Kentucky back in the mid '90's. They chose to locate their switch on a mountain near Pikeville, KY, and had a colocated cell on an FM tower there. About once a week B-52's would fly by below the mountaintop, usually 4 at a time. They were so close I could see the cockpit curtains were closed. I reckon they were practicing nap of the earth flying.....
You mean we are bombing the people setting the IED's in place?
I wonder who tipped off Mookie? His trip was very well timed...
