news of the long war

Thread 2

Since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, our nation has fought a global war against violent extremists who use terrorism as their weapon of choice, and who seek to destroy our free way of life. Our enemies seek weapons of mass destruction and, if they are successful, will likely attempt to use them in their conflict with free people everywhere. Currently, the struggle is centered in Iraq and Afghanistan, but we will need to be prepared and arranged to successfully defend our nation and its interests around the globe for years to come. DOD

Our enemies include all the Muslims who dream of knocking Western Civilization off its perch atop humanity’s dung heap. Islam is fractured into any number of sects, tribes and ethnic groups, but the dream of destroying us cuts across all the fault lines. Islamic terrorists are merely the tip of a very large spear.

J. Peter Mulhern, the American Thinker, September 18

The determination behind that fight is real, the hatred is real, and the excuses for doing this are very real in the minds of those who have decided to walk that path. We can respond in two ways: Try to ignore or negotiate with people who do not want to negotiate in good faith, because what they want is our destruction, or to stand up against the darkness of those who see all of us, our way of life, our culture and our aspirations as something worth eliminating.

Either: "And God willing, with the force of God behind it, we shall soon experience a world without the United States and Zionism," Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

Or: "With vigilance, determination, courage, we will defeat the enemies of freedom, and we will leave behind a more peaceful world for our children and our grandchildren." GW Bush.

Here's where I will post news and info about the Long War. Let me know if you're interested.

PROGRAMME

In the 1994 Farnborough Air Show China revealed its QW-1 man-portable air defence system (Manpad). Some reports indicated that the QW-1 may have been based on the U.S. Stinger technology and design, but this cannot be confirmed. According to the brochure of China Precision Machinery Import and Export Company (CPMIEC), the QW-1 is claimed to surpass the US Stinger in maximum effective range, target seeker tracking capability, warhead power and other specifications.

Compared to the first-generation HN-5, which could only attack jet aircraft targets from tail aspect, the QW-1 is capable of engaging jet and propeller-driven aircraft and helicopters from all aspects. As well as being carried by soldiers, the QW-1 can be fired from launchers mounted on vehicles and ships, or used in the mixed anti-aircraft artillery and air-defence missile battery, or carried by helicopter as a short-range air-to-air missile.

The QW-1 entered service with the PLA in the mid-1990s in a small number, and is built by Pakistan under license as Anza MK-2. During the 1999 India-Pakistan conflict at Kargil, the China-made QW-1 reportedly shot down an Indian Air Force MiG-21 and a MiG-27. China has also developed the improved varians QW-1A and QW-1M.

DESIGN

The system consists of the missile, a reusable tube launcher, and a thermal battery. The missile is powered by a solid rocket engine, and has a maximum range of 5km against low flying airborne targets. The missile can be switched from storage mode into combat mode within 10 seconds.<<<<^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^NOTE!

Nope!

TEHRAN, Iran - Eighteen people were killed on Wednesday when a bomb exploded next to a bus in the southeastern city of Zahedan, the official IRNA news agency reported.

The bomb was hidden in a car by “armed rebels and attackers” and exploded as the bus, belonging to the ground forces of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, passed by, the agency reported.

“In this act 18 Zahedan citizens have been martyred. Rebels and those who create insecurity martyred these people in a terrorist act by laying a trap close to a bus,” Qassim Rezai, a military commander, was quoted as saying.

It was not clear if those killed were members of the Guards.

Zahedan is close to the border with Pakistan and Afghanistan. There are often clashes between security forces and armed groups in the area involved in the drugs trade.
