Four Britons held in Kenya on suspicion of fighting alongside Islamist militias in Somalia have been detained by police under anti-terror laws following their return to the UK today. The men, all in their 20s and from the London area, arrived at RAF Brize Norton, in Oxfordshire, from the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, at 6.50am, a Metropolitan police spokeswoman said.
They were taken to a police station in west London, where they were being detained, the spokeswoman said. She added that the men had not been arrested.
Officers have nine hours to hold the Britons, who are being detained under the Terrorism Act, before they must either formally arrest or release them.
Kenyan authorities seized the men after they apparently crossed the country's border with Somalia on January 20 having escaped from Ethiopian troops who launched an offensive against Islamist forces in Somalia late last year.
The Britons were deported to Somalia on Saturday. Yesterday, they were handed over to British consular officials and flown back to Nairobi prior to being sent back to the UK. Foreign Office officials said the men were "in good physical condition".
