This guy is not ready for prime time.

The first time I really paid any attention to George Allen was when he was making waves to run for the WH (pre-06 election).

I caught him on Meet the Press. He just didn't come across as being 'ready for prime time'. I posted a comment to that effect and got skewered by the Allenites.

That was a few months before his macaca moment.

I have a similar impression of Obama. I listened to some of his 'announcement' over the weekend. It was a typical political speech, written with a allot of high-sounding rhetoric that had little substance. It reminded me of many of John Kerry's speeches and responses to questions -- they could drag on and on and on, but when you analyzed what he said, he actually said nothing of substance.
