Giuliani Inches Closer To Official Announcement

Moves Closer To Full-Fledged Presidential Run

(CBS/AP) WASHINGTON -- Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani on Monday defended the Iraq war and criticized Al Gore's global-warming movie.

As for his presidential ambitions, Giuliani coyly inched closer to a formal announcement.

"I am 100 percent committed," he said. "That official part, I still have to do a formal announcement. But we'll figure out how to do that. My idea is that I'm going to try to announce this in 100 different places."

Giuliani, a Republican, said he supports efforts to move California's 2008 presidential primary from June to February, a shift that would allow him to compete outside of conservative early voting states where his stands on gays, guns and abortion have been viewed as too liberal.

A number of other states are also considering moving up their primaries.

In a wide-ranging speech, Giuliani emphasized his experience as mayor during the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and his record on reducing crime, unemployment and other problems in the city.

He said the war in Iraq is crucial to combating global terrorism.

"What America needs is probably a reminder of why this is happening and why the sacrifice of those American lives, which is heartbreaking, is necessary," he said. "It's necessary because having a stable situation in Iraq will quicken our ability to defeat terrorism."

Pulling out of the country too quickly, he said, will allow terrorism to "get a home and a headquarters attached to Iran and Syria."

When asked about former Vice President Al Gore's Oscar-nominated documentary about global warming, "An Inconvenient Truth," Giuliani criticized the film as lacking in solutions.

Giuliani said he believes global warming is occurring but is not sure how much is caused by humans, and he suggested the U.S. should look at expanding its use of nuclear power and other alternative energy sources.

He also said the U.S. health care crisis must be solved by "preserving the private, competitive market-driven nature of health care."

"That's a much better solution than a topdown government plan," he said.

Is this DU all of a sudden?

I'm concerned about the conservative base. My main concern, lesser government, just protect our country.

Look, if you want Lincoln, Silent Cal or Reagan, become a grave robber; you aren't going to get a replacement.

Let's look at the succession of your RINO Presidents, shall we?

Eisenhower led to Kennedy.
Nixon/Ford led to Carter.
Bush I led to Clinton.
Bush II has reinvigorated the Democrat Party.

In each case, the public tired of the RINO and went for the Democrats, thinking them not far different, and they were right. Compare that to Reagan, who is the ONLY modern Republican President who was followed by another Republican. In his case, the public enjoyed the benefits of conservatism and wanted more, as they still do. My intent is to do my best to see that they realize that wish.

So genius, what parta of the Republican Platform is worth dumping in order to pretend to be palatable to moderates without looking like a Democrat? Give us a list; you'll soon learn how shallow its presumptions really are.

FR is not representative of the greater American populace.

This forum was just as fractured the last time around and came back together; more or less. FR will NEVER again be as all together, as it was when Clinton was president. Even IF *spit* Hillary is elected, blame for such a catastrophe will probably keep it separated/Balkanized; if recent history is any indication.

"Be true to the principles it was founded on.............."? Abolishing slavery? LOL

Look, if you want Lincoln, Silent Cal or Reagan, become a grave robber; you aren't going to get a replacement. Times change, problems change, and remember, Ike was NO Goldwater; for all that and Barry lost in a massive landslide.

--

You said a mouthful, nopardons.

I'd like to leave it at that and allow those words to stand as to why I find you to be one of the more difficult posters to follow much less swallow here at FR.

I doubt you are old enough to have voted for either Ike or Barry, yet odly enough, you seem to revel in Goldwater's defeat in your own unique condescending way.

The slavery remark is from left field and hardly relevant to the issues at hand but not untypical of a response from you, imo.

Principles? Yeah, who needs them?

As to robbing graves, I'll pass on that one, I shovel enough BS offered up here by certain folks as is to bother with the crudity of the comment and its import here.

You seem pretty indifferent as to what is happening in California currently, so it's no surprise that for you, that should apply to the GOP nationally as well and your choice to see it and FR cajoled to move further to the left.

I guess I see you as one of many who would rather take the easy path and ignoring the cost associated with moving to the middle and what it will portend in the long run. Your continued flirtations and support for candidates further to the left than the right of center on any number of issues when it comes to candidates is evidence of that.

FR was never intended to be representative of the greater
American populace, only to provide a forum for and gathering place of free people with higher aspirations working towards a furtherance of a conservative agenda, not its diminishment.

The sooner folks quit their dalliances with the middle , the better, imo. Until then, FR will remain fractured and whose fault will that be in the end?

"It's necessary because having a stable situation in Iraq will quicken our ability to defeat terrorism."

I will support any candidate in the general election who holds this view. A president with this conviction is the only thing that will stand in the way of our feckless Congress' capitulation on the world stage and a massive slaughter in Iraq.

It is issue #1.
