BAGHDAD — Multi-National - Force troops have taken part in a three staged operation alongside soldiers from the Iraqi Army and officers from the Iraqi Police Force.
In the early hours of Feb. 6, soldiers swooped on a number of locations in Hay A'Tanumah on the eastern bank of the Shatt Al'Arab opposite the main town of Basra.
These locations were suspected of being used for criminal activity in the Basra province. Six people were detained during the operation and later released. A quantity of munitions were discovered and later disposed of by explosive experts.
"We're working on information gathered over the last few weeks, there are known criminals operating out of these locations and it's our aim to stop them. It a thoroughly planned strike operation and so far it's been successful as we've detained a number of individuals," said Warrant Officer Class Two Dave Youngs, Company Sergeant Major B Company, 2 Rifles
"We're looking for ammunition and any material that could be used to make Improvised Explosive Devices. These are being used against our troops and also the Iraqis. If we seize any here, we'll make sure they are disposed of in a controlled environment," said Sapper Frazer Brown, Joint Forces Explosive Ordinance Disposal.
During the second stage of the operation, MNF worked closely with Iraqi Security Forces (ISF). They carried out local patrols and conducted vehicle checks to counter smuggling and illegal activity in the area.
"We've found a number of items including mobile phones, documentation, items of military uniform and ammunition. we're doing this so that we can counter smuggling into Basra City and then prevent attacks on MNF and Iraqi forces,” said Corporal Paul McAleese, 2 Rifles.
The troops were well received by the local population, who continue to be receptive to the progress made in the area as a result of the SINBAD projects.
"It's really important to get out on the ground and reassure the locals that stability and security is being brought back to Basra. The people we've spoken to have been receptive and friendly. It's good to see that Operation SINBAD is making a difference to the lives of the people here,” said Lt. Alistair Davis, B Company, 2 Rifles.
A major in the Iraqi Police Force added, "Working with the MNF is going well and we're showing those fighting against us that we're not afraid."
As part of the third phase of the operation, local councils, Sheiks and contractors in Hay A'Tanumah were met by MNF and ISF.
Brigadier Tim Evans, MBE, Commander 19 Light Brigade, was updated on the progress of the SINBAD projects. He also held informal meetings with key community leaders and discussed the potential for future SINBAD projects.
Troops were met by throngs of children as they carried out their patrols and many of the locals interacted with the British troops. Whilst happy with the MNF presence in the short term, they look forward to the security situation becoming stable enough for their own Iraqi forces to take over control of the province.
