Maybe as a young man he ran into the fear that some cabdrivers have when picking up black riders in certain neighborhoods, but I seriously doubt that Barack Obama -- Harvard Law student, law professor, state senator and U.S. Senator, has run into that anytime recently.

How a cab driver know what school he went to? If a cab driver decides that he is going to avoid black patrons for whatever reason, then it wouldn't matter what school the black person went to, where they live, or whether their mother was white. It is strictly based on the color of that person's skin, and the reasons why the driver may avoid such people.

He wouldn't know. My point was that being in the circles he has been in in the past 15-20 years, and living where he has probably lived, and by the way he conducts himself (which I assume is the way he has for some time), I doubt that a cabdriver would have any more concern about picking up Obama than he would picking up me. I understand what he was alluding to -- the experience of a lot of blacks who can't get a cab to pick them up, justly on unjustly, because they are black or because of where they live or because of where they might want to go. There was a big controversy around here a few years ago on that very issue. Cabbies were getting shot and robbed in black neighborhoods and other drivers refused to go there. I ran into that myself recently, when I called for a cab to pick me up in my more-or-less white neighborhood on the southside, and the driver hinted that his company didn't usually go "that far south."

I really doubt that Obama has run into this recently, and I think he was trying hard to establish his credentials in the "black experience" which a lot of blacks evidently think he lacks.
