I use to slide down the big slide when I was a kid in leather shoes crouched down after kids threw snow on the slide. Other kids laid down and we tried to see how many we could jump. The recess monitors just watched and shook their heads, knowing someone was going to get hurt but they knew how much fun we were having, and we all agreed it was a blast.

I broke my arm when I fell from the monkey bars in 4th grade too, and I don't remember my parents threatening to sue the school either, they just shrugged and and told me to be careful, next time it might be my neck. WTH is wrong with people now?

We are raising a entire generation of wusses.

It's all about the insurance companies.
I have a friend whose son was injured while playing tag/chase/whatever. He was taken to the hospital and they authorized am MRI. Months later this friend received a bill for the full amount which she refuted and won. Then they asked her and her son to give a statement so as to go after the school for said charges. Over 5K worth.

I think that teachers want these kids out playing and burning off excess energy. It's the fear of lawsuits that keep the kids sitting on the swings.

It's very sad. A few years ago, when my son was in elementary school, any activity that boys would enjoy was outlawed. No more kickball, playing tag, climbing on things, or even running. The boys were reduced to spending their recess time the way the girls do: strolling slowly around the "playground" while talking. They were quite depressed. For much of the school year it's too dark and cold too soon after school for them to have any chance to play outside when the school day is over, so they got no free exercise at all.

But the important thing is, they're safe and they're being raised to be nice young ladies. < /s>

One of the parents was upset because her son broke his arm? Well, I broke my wrist in two places walking my dog. Guess I have to put her down now. /s

I find the utter hypocrisy, especially here in Arizona where they run summer football camps and have these kids out there running drills in 120 weather. They don't care if the kids get hurt (I can't even count how many kids ended up with heatstroke last summer) as long as it is bringing money in (the football program here brings in a lot).

The whole world seems to have gone insane.
