US presidential candidate Barack Obama has told Prime Minister John Howard to put up or shut up. Mr Obama, speaking at a packed press conference in Iowa today, said if MrHoward was concerned about the situation in Iraq he should send 20,000 Australian troops to the strife-torn nation.
The Illinois senator added that if Mr Howard did not send the troops, then the prime minister's attack on the Democrat presidential hopeful's Iraq policy was "empty rhetoric''.
"I would also note that we have close to 140,000 troops on the ground now and my understanding is that Mr Howard has deployed 1400,''Mr Obama, who next year could become the first African American to be elected US president, said.
"So, if he's ginned up to fight the good fight in Iraq, I would suggest he calls up another 20,000 Australians and sends them up to Iraq.
"Otherwise, it's just a bunch of empty rhetoric.''
Mr Howard sparked the war of words yesterday when he took the extraordinary step of declaring that he hoped Mr Obama did not become president of the US, and that his election would be disastrous for the war on terrorism.
Mr Howard said Mr Obama's plan to pull America's combat brigades out of Iraq by March 31, 2008, was a strategy that would "destabilise and destroy Iraq, and create chaos and a victory for the terrorists''.
"If I were running al-Qaeda in Iraq, I would put a circle around March 2008 and be praying as many times as possible for a victory, not only for Obama but also for the Democrats,'' Mr Howard said.

A cut and run, wet behind the ears dim giving John Howard advice? Obama Hussein isn't even good enough to carry John Howards jock.
Better yet show a knife that not knife Osmara
That KNIFE ROFL in Aussie accent
Just more talking out of his 'back end'... Noise, words, sound bites, no sense. (but MSM brilliant)
If you have to ask that question, then you probably already know the answer.
Ignorance. The US is 15 times larger than Australia, and no western/allied nation maintains the proportional military that we do save Korea and Israel. He should keep up this rhetoric though; hopefully he'll be nominated and then flushed.
The United States has ABOUT 300 million people. (Who knows how many illegals we have.)
The Aussies have about 20 million.
So for the Aussies to equal the American participation on Iraq by quota share, they would only have to send an additional 8,000 troops, not the 20,000 Husseain-Osama-Obama claims.
If a REPUBLICAN made that gross a mathematical error, it would be headline news for a week.
BHO GO HOME! (not Illinois either!)
Our kindest thanks and gratitude to our Aussie Allies!!!!! This POS does NOT speak for the USA!!!!!
When Mr. Howard walks you can hear the sound of click-clack, click-clack being emitted from his slacks. All we are hearing from our congress and administration is dead silence.
I would have used the work 'effeminate' rather than wimp but you made your point.
....Obviously aren't named Obama!
So what exactly doe the junior senator from Minnesota want? Either he wants all the troops out or more sent in. Those are his current two positions. Perhaps tomorrow he'll want to maintain them at current levels as well.
By the way, as regards the Falklands, the Argentines were clearly in the wrong. They should be grateful Margaret did not let loose her subs aside from the Belgrano, or their entire fleet would have been on the bottom of the ocean.
Except for that gun grab. Unfortunate, that.
You know the DBM is going to ask W to chime in on this...
So the troops from Australia already risking their lives are empty rhetoric? This coming from the empty suit himself that only won election because Ditka chose not to run and Ryan decided to become that state's Taft.
Someone tell Obama he's a freshmen, anyway, and must wait for Turbin to slam the Australian troops before his turn is up.
WHAT IS THIS WITH THE
"So if he's GINNED up to fight the good fight.."
Obama does what the left does best...a lot of angery, immaturity and "feelings rhetoric".
I'm trying to keep the punches above the belt, but .. you may be on to something.
