THE Prime Minister has fired another salvo in his growing war of words with US presidential hopeful Barack Obama, saying the senator had dodged his criticism of his Iraq withdrawal plan.
Senator Obama today challenged John Howard to commit another 20,000 Australian troops to Iraq after the Prime Minister said his call to bring American troops home by March 2008 would be a victory for al Qaeda in Iraq, who would be hoping for a Democrat win in next year's presidential election.
The US senator accused Mr Howard of "empty rhetoric" in his criticism of his stand, as Australia has committed only a fraction of the number of troops the US military has sent to Iraq.
The Federal Opposition has said Mr Howard is letting his personal friendship with US President George W. Bush cloud his judgment and should apoligise.
But far from backing down from the developing spat, Mr Howard has said today that Senator Obama's response missed the point of his criticism.
"I think the most interesting thing about (Senator Obama's comments) is that it didn't really address the substance of the issue," Mr Howard has said on ABC Radio.

If he go for the record he be in 80s RIGHT
What a HOOT! Obama criticizing one of our best allies in the War on Terror...Obama would rather cozey up to Iran and Syria and turn his back on those that are working with us, and embrace those that are working against us. Too funny. Just goes to show what an empty suit can accomplish, in what...one day or two? I was mad at Cornyn today for his comments on CNN, he should have defended Howard more, like Duncan Hunter did, as Howard has been a mighty ally in this war. And, I don't even think we had to ask them, they jumped in on their own, Howard undertands the threat, Obama clearly doesn't.
His business may not be here so to speak, but his country's safety depends on the outcome of the next election..
Right now ..we are not looking so great. I think his impetus is helpful. Somewhat like Churchill, I think, he's trying to regenerate the American SPINE!!
With respect, while Mr Howard would be delighted with a continuing Republican Presidency, his comments aren't intended to help US Republicans or conservatives. They are intended to help Australia and Australians - and that is his job. If the US pulls out of Iraq in the way Obama wants it to, it means Australian soldiers, sailors, and airmen put their lives on the line for nothing.
That is not an acceptable situation to Australia. And the Prime Minister of Australia will make that clear.
He will do well in the midwest and the south.........................ROTFLMAO!
I find myself rooting for Prime Minister Howard.
I'm open for Australia wine suggestions.
I'll pop the cork when the disingenuous Obama suffers a shattering defeat at the polls.
I wasn't aware that America lacked a spine.
I didn't watch 60 Minutes...but I listened to it on the radio...
Yes...it was an amazing piece, Dad...
I wonder if the other Senators that are running...that have been in the Senate for a LONG time are wondering how this "snot nosed sophomore" can get a 60 Minutes commercial and they can't?? LOL
I loved one of the remarks at the end of that article....
One of the posters got mad at Howard for "insulting possibly the next President of the United States"....LOL, too funny!
""I think the most interesting thing about (Senator Obama's comments) is that it didn't really address the substance of the issue,"
I think Hussein "Osama" Obama didn't address the issue because he did not understand the issue, much less the substance of the issue.
Too many folks take this nincompoop Obama as very intelligent. He may be clean, but he ain't intelligent nor is he good looking, on the contrary.
He is just not ready for prime time. Hillary will smoke this Juvenile, and there will be nothing left but a pair of socks.
I got question how long before Osmara Barek go brothera defense by calling PM Howard H word or Whitey word
He probably accused PM Howard of whack sweet Abgorine people of Austrila
I saw a clip of Obama saying that...and he also took on the media...he is a very cocky SOB.
Well in case he loses I hope his FELLOW mate Rupert Murdoch hire him as consultant for Fox news or SKY news
Not quite - the Prime Minister is 67. He'd beat Menzies record at 74.
Menzies himself retired at 71 - and that was forty years ago when people didn't live as long.
Thank you for the explanation. Still, if that's his intention, he could have argued about the issue without mentioning Obama.
LOL!
Yoou made me laugh.
Thanks.
Agreed. I was trying to post the same point you made on the news site, but a refresh killed it. Diana Kerry was the emissary, sister of the failed Democrat candidate. Glad was I to see two Kerry losses in the span of six months.
Please tell your leadership, if you have any way to contact PM Howard, that there are Americans who deeply appreciate your standing with us in Afghanistan and Iraq. In 2002, one of your country's more noted pastors, Brian Houston of Hillsong Church, visited us here in the States, and mentioned that he was very proud to announce that his country's troops were serving alongside our troops in the GWOT. We gave him a hearty ovation.
Continued thanks to you, and I totally stand with your PM's remarks.
I am a Texan...and I love Cornyn...but his hasty comment about Howard just gave the MSM and the dems MORE propaganda and rhetoric to use against the GOP...ugh
OH MAN he younger DAMN I thought he was in 70s originally until Aussie Dasher correct me I thought PM Howard was in 60 or late 50s I am serious I made him YOUNGER ROFL
