Silence on Katrina still drawing notice

At the House Democratic retreat on Feb. 4, President Bush was asked by Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., why he didn't mention Hurricane Katrina in his State of the Union speech. Bush replied, according to Thompson's Chief of Staff Lanier Avant, that he didn't say anything about the national parks either, even though he cares about them.

Making recovery pitches from afar

Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., has not visited the Gulf Coast disaster zone to see the damage from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. "I just haven't had the chance," he said recently. "I will come down."

Jefferson says staff isn't falling apart

Rep. William Jefferson, D-New Orleans, said there's no need to call the doctor; he is not hemorrhaging. The congressman took issue with an item in last week's On the Hill saying he was "hemorrhaging" staff after the departure of his chief of staff, legislative director and spokeswoman all within the span of a few weeks. Jefferson said other offices, such as that of Rep. Mel Watt, D-N.C., have lost large numbers of staff in a short period and that all three of his employees went on to higher-paying jobs. Jefferson is the target of a federal probe in which two of his former associates have pleaded guilty to bribery-related charges. Jefferson has not been charged and has denied wrongdoing. . . . . . . .

Has anyone heard what the attendance is at this year's bacchanal? I've predicted that Mardi Gras will tell the tale for New Orleans. If it goes horribly this year, bank the fire. It's the end of the line.

I just haven't had the chance," [Barney Frank] said recently. "I will come go down."

We all know Barney goes down.

By the way what is holding up the federal charges against Jefferson. I mean besides political cowardice.

What the hell is taking the Feds so long to lock this gangster up. The system is broken. We spend millions to prosecute Libby and the whole country is in an uproar over a homosexual congressman while people like Sandy Burglar, etc. get free passes.

"I will come down."
"I will go down."
"I will be down."

There's no way Bawney can screw that one up (so to speak)...
