Giuliani: Gun control helped lower crime

Rudy Giuliani addressed a potentially troublesome issue with conservative voters, saying his policies as mayor to get handguns off the street helped reduce crime in New York.

"I used gun control as mayor," he said at a news conference Saturday during a swing through California. But "I understand the Second Amendment. I understand the right to bear arms."

He said what he did as mayor would have no effect on hunting.

Addressing another potential trouble spot with conservatives, Giuliani spoke in favor of a border fence, saying, "You have to have secure borders, you have to have a fence, and the fence I think has to be a highly technological one."

The nation needs to know, he said, who is coming into the country and why. But he provided scant details on how he would deal with illegal immigrants already in the country. Citizens, he added, should be able to read and write English.

Giuliani was to make an address Monday in Silicon Valley and he was to appear Tuesday at an agricultural fair in the Central Valley.

Asked when he would make a formal announcement that he is a candidate for the Republican nomination, Giuliani said: "Well, formally announce? I don't know."

One more time where the facts don't meet the test. But, he was talking to the "subjects" of California not free citizens.

As to having no effect on hunting, the second amendment is not about hunting unless the species is politician. That is a point that I will never understand.

"He said what he did as mayor would have no effect on hunting."

That's good to hear, especially for sportsmen all over the country that had planned their New York City hunting trips!

At least now all those Cockroach and Rat tags won't go to waste.

That is so ridiculous, its funny. LOL 21 months from the election, a year away from the primaries. You ought to be on stage as comic relief.

I will not vote for him.

I will not vote for him if he is the presidential candidate.

I. Will. Not. Vote. For. Him.

What does the 2nd amendment have to do with hunting? If he was trying to make me feel better about him, he failed miserablely.

His(RINO-rudy) victory will be similar to Reagans second election landslide.

If this comes to pass, it will be NOTHING like President Reagan's re-election.

This time around, instead of a man who could be considered reliably CONSERVATIVE on a VAST MAJORITY of the issues, we'd have...

RINO-rudy, the EXACT OPPOSITE.

An election between Hillary and Rudy is simply a Dem vs Dem election.

100% correct.

Doesn't matter what Rudy Giuliani believes in or doesn't believe in. If you are a Conservative, The 2008 election is about one thing and one thing only. Stopping Hillary. This becomes doublely important in view of the midterm elections. The numbers suggest that Giuliani is the GOP candidate who can achieve that outcome. Once in office practical politics will move Giuliani to the right. While Giuliani may not be conservative enough for some, he is light years more conservative than Hillary.

To exercise power you have to win first. If you don't win then "principles" becomes a philosophical exercise over a cup of coffee.

Bogus. Crime was reduced because the NYPD was under new management.

I hate to tell you this, but Rudy has always been a gun-grabber. I've followed his antics for years, and he does not understand the meaning of the 2nd Amendment, no matter what the MSM says. I cannot hold my nose and vote for him.

If you want to parse words, I'd say the party now has some deep fissures but hasn't been ripped apart, YET. In the next two years it could go either way.

Well we might not like it, but he is right. In NYC, that was the case.

John Lott, and others that have studied the subject and written extensively on it, would beg to differ.

The crime rate in that God-forsaken hell-hole of a northeastern-corridor city, WOULD have gone down MUCH sooner and MUCH more dramatically if the liberal gun-grabbing dems and RINOs that run that Police State had enabled the law-abiding citizens to practice their God-given 2nd Amendment RIGHTS by using Concealed Carry.
