Giuliani: Gun control helped lower crime

Rudy Giuliani addressed a potentially troublesome issue with conservative voters, saying his policies as mayor to get handguns off the street helped reduce crime in New York.

"I used gun control as mayor," he said at a news conference Saturday during a swing through California. But "I understand the Second Amendment. I understand the right to bear arms."

He said what he did as mayor would have no effect on hunting.

Addressing another potential trouble spot with conservatives, Giuliani spoke in favor of a border fence, saying, "You have to have secure borders, you have to have a fence, and the fence I think has to be a highly technological one."

The nation needs to know, he said, who is coming into the country and why. But he provided scant details on how he would deal with illegal immigrants already in the country. Citizens, he added, should be able to read and write English.

Giuliani was to make an address Monday in Silicon Valley and he was to appear Tuesday at an agricultural fair in the Central Valley.

Asked when he would make a formal announcement that he is a candidate for the Republican nomination, Giuliani said: "Well, formally announce? I don't know."

PING!

Anybody who thinks Rudy Giuliani is the Great Hope for this nation before Primary Season even starts should continue looking around.

No, Mr. Mayor, you absolutely do not understand the 2nd amendment. It's NOT about hunting.

That level of misunderstanding, for me, and IMHO, disqualifies you for consideration for my vote.

Thanks for clearing that up, Rudy. You made all of those statements in the past that made you sound like a gun grabber, but some people weren't sure if we should pay attention to such old material. Now we have an answer to that question: your inner-statist is still alive and kicking.

What sort of gun regulation is consistent with the Second Amendment?

How about not allowing convicted prisoners in a federal penitentiary access to firearms while they are serving their time? Do you think that particular gun regulation is consistent with the Second Amendment or should prisoners be able to claim a RTKBA while in the pen?

"Sorry, it's an A/B situation. If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice."

It its between Rudy and Hillary, then it is simply between two Dems. I won't vote for any DEM.

I will go 3rd party...

Rudy on gun control: "You've got to REGULATE consistent with the Second Amendment"

Exactly. The right of citizens to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed ... unless King Rudy decides otherwise.

I think you missed the point of my post - which was to discredit the whole approach of "gun control" to fight crime...

I think guns should be bought and sold by private parties with a background check, with the identity of the purchaser being discarded once the state police clear them of any crimes.

I think CCW should be the Vermont/Alaska model, where no permits are needed, it would be like carrying a knife or other dangeroius weapon.

And as far as your belief that guns and CCW should be banned in big cities, I live in Oregon and I am VERY happy that I can legally carry in Portland, whereas I cannot in Las Vegas or Spokane, two dangerous cities where I wissh I could carry.

President Bush helped with the gun issue by sending strong signals to the UN to not back that ridiculous anti-gun treaty, and he encouraged the anti-lawsuit against gun manufacturers bill that stopped people like Giuliani from suing gun manufacturers into bankruptcy.

If Rudy becomes president I could easily see him backing Bloomberg and Schumer, et al, into a new round of ruinous lawsuits and regulations designed to destroy firearms manufacturing in this country.

He WOULD let us keep the single-action and double barreled shotguns used for hunting ducks, though!

I think I understand your post, we agree.

My point was he actually caused crime to rise by making citizens who did not comply with his gun regulations the criminals. That means more criminals.

I hope Bill Richardson is the Dem candidate so I can vote for a pro-gun candidate if Rudy is the GOP candidate.

Now, if Hitliary is the candidate, I don't know, yet, what I shall do.

Exactly.

Look at Chicago, where a SWAT team was sent in to arrest a Chicago Bear because he owned "assault rifles."

It was treated as a major horror, splashed all over the news...this football player owning semi-auto weapons that are almost de riguer to own in the Free United States.

In fact, I don't know ANYONE who doesn't own at least one AR-15, FN FAL, HK-91, SKS or semi-auto AK 47...guns that would make Chicago SWAT teams kick down our doors and arrest us with MP 5's pointed at our heads.

A scenario I suspect Rudy and the rest of the RINO Pubbies would love to implement.

Why are people so ignorant what it took for Rudy to achieve control over NYC. They call it leadership? I don't want that kind of leadership.

A scenario I suspect Rudy and the rest of the RINO Pubbies would love to implement.

It really is an eye opener to see a lib like this as a Republican candidate, and who supports him.

Scary!

OK, what do you do regarding the so-called "straw purchases" - people who buy guns in quantity in one state, and bring them to another state to sell them, skirting those laws, the background check, etc.

I'm not against the current laws regarding strawman purchases by customers at FFL-licensed dealers.

Bloomberg's lawsuits have just been declared to be not an authentic prosecution of illegalities, and the ATF said they will not prosecute the dealers Bloomberg is suing.

Bloomberg, however, is continuing to sue those dealers civilly, with the intent of gaining eventual control over firearms transactions in America, in my opinion.

It's the same way Mayor Daley of Chicago sued to get the names and addresses of EVERYONE that had their names entered on FFL transactions awhile back, not just those purchases in Illinois, but EVERYWHERE, with the eventual goal of suing/tracking and controlling firearms customers in all 50 states.

That was stopped, by the way, but Bloomberg was attempting the same sort of nationwide harrasment of gun owners that Daley tried.

I fear the government's shutting down firearms ownership a lot more than I do "strawmen" buying guns...criminals will get whatever they want, be it heroin, meth, cocaine or guns. They don't pay attention to the law, they are criminals and Daley/Bloomberg/Giuliani type gun bans won't stop them, it will just stop Joe Citizen.

"The crime rate in that God-forsaken hell-hole of a northeastern-corridor city, WOULD have gone down MUCH sooner and MUCH more dramatically if the liberal gun-grabbing dems and RINOs that run that Police State had enabled the law-abiding citizens to practice their God-given 2nd Amendment RIGHTS by using Concealed Carry."

If you think most law abiding NY City dwellers wanted to carry a gun, or would have in a million years, you don't know much about the people in this "God-forsaken hell-hole." Nevertheless the pacifists needed protection.
