Since the bullet lodged in the metal hard drive, maybe that backed up by the steel frame and magnesium shell could have stopped it.

If so, that may be the only spot that is bulletproof in the whole box. I agree, magnesium alone wouldn't stop one.

Kinda reminds me of some of those really tough Nokia cell phones. You know, the ones that are designed to be run over with an SUV, thrown in a swimming pool, and left uncharged for days but will work forever. Sexy they ain't--but you don't have to worry about breakage!

I know there are mountains there. My question was more along the lines of what was an American doing there.

No hard drive, not even the 18 year old IBM monsters, has EVER stopped one of my 5.56mm bullets ;)

While I have yet to carry a laptop with me on a combat mission, I can tell you that the Army is significantly more digital-based than every before, so it is not out of the ordinary for some support types to be carrying them for myriad reasons.

For all we know the bullet just got done traveling a mile.

Stranger things have stopped bullets I can't see why a laptop can't also.

I retired so long ago, I am starting to feel old.

Question: Have you ever SHOT a hard drive with a rifle?

I've shot dozens of hard drives and several old laptops and there's nothing in them that would stop a bullet at any significant velocity. I've even shot the big IBM suckers from that late 80's/early 90's and the bullet zipped right through the case, platters and board.

I just can't see this happening unless the bullet had lost significant velocity (long range, ricochet, et al).
