WASHINGTON - Skeptical congressional Democrats said Sunday the Bush administration should move cautiously before accusing Iran of fomenting a campaign of violence against U.S. troops in Iraq.

The members of Congress spoke on the morning talk shows as the U.S. military said it believes orders came from the highest levels of the Iranian government to send components for sophisticated roadside bombs in Iraq.

The military told reporters in Baghdad that between June 2004 and last week, more than 170 Americans had been killed by the bombs, which the military calls "explosively formed projectiles." Those weapons are capable of destroying an Abrams tank.

Explosives seem to be flowing into Iraq from Iran, but does it stem from a deliberate government policy or rogue elements within the Iranian government? asked Sen. Jack Reed (news, bio, voting record), D-R.I., who serves on the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., said that ultimately Iran wants a stable Iraq and that the United States needs to engage in diplomacy.

Sen. Christopher Dodd (news, bio, voting record), D-Conn., said the administration could be laying the groundwork for an attack on Iran and that "I'm worried about that. That's how we got into the mess in Iraq," by relying on what Dodd called "doctored information."

Senate Intelligence Committee member Ron Wyden (news, bio, voting record), D-Ore., said "the administration is engaged in a drumbeat with Iran that is much like the drumbeat that they did with Iraq. We're going to insist on accountability."

On the Republican side, Sen. Trent Lott (news, bio, voting record) of Mississippi said he does not think the United States is trying to make a case for attacking Iran. Lott said the U.S. should try to stop the flow of munitions through Iran to Iraq but that "you do that by interdiction ... you don't do it by invasion."

Sen. John Cornyn (news, bio, voting record), R-Texas, spoke in more aggressive tones, saying that "we have to do everything within our power to stop" any cross-border flow.

Reed spoke on "Fox News Sunday," Kerry on ABC's "This Week," and Dodd and Lott on CBS's "Face the Nation" and Cornyn and Wyden on CNN's "Late Edition."

The way I see it is that the dems have expended a lot of hot air to the opinion that contrary to history, Pres. Bush had NO intelligence that we needed to go to war with Iraq....

Now, they are saying the same thing about Iran.

I would love to have someone ask one of the many, many Senators that are running for POTUS from the dem's side, how they, then, would handle intelligence coming in that Iran does have a nuke and it is coming our way???

Would they wait until it takes out half of America?? Would they wait until they take out all of Israel??

And, for the ones that DID vote to go to war in Iraq, based on the intelligence that Bush had...are they now saying we should TRUST them if they claim they were "duped" by their own POTUS??

How could then then deal with say, Putin??

At the least we need to show a political resolve showing a willingness to thwart any help Iran is giving the terrorist in Iraq.

I disagree with all of these Senators. The Democrats simply want to ignore Iran and fight Bush. They're basically Iran's apologists due to their blind hatred for Bush. Lott wants a policy of interdiction that will work as well as the effort we have on our own borders when stopping illegal immigrants.

We must get beyond the idea that only a proportional response is what's called for. Iran has in effect killed hundreds of Americans, probably thousands of Iraqis, thousands of Lebanese, and scores of Israelis through its support for terrorist proxies armed, equipped, and trained by Iran.

Maybe the Democrats do want to give Iran a pass. After all, Iran's policies and practice are probably not something that bothers them. Their main concern is how can they undermine the president and regain power. But I don't want to give Iran a pass or treat them as a de facto ally in the war against Bush. For the sake of humanity and civilization, I want Iran's military broken; it's training camps for terrorists destroyed; it's military infrastructure completely destroyed (military airfields and military planes and helicopters; ammunition storage areas, navy ships, missiles and rockets, military motor pools, etc. all destroyed). There must be a very high price paid by Iran before it goes nuclear. In fact, obviously its nuclear research facilities and their ancillary support network must be obliterated. The Democrats will appease Iran until it controls most of the world's oil, fulfills its often openly stated goal of destroying the Israeli nation, and can dictate the terms of what is acceptable to it in the world. WE must decide soon who will win the war on terror - the free peoples who govern themselves - albeit with errors and folly - or the mad mullahs in Iran whose corruption and cruelty is persistently evil and the most expansionistic threat via proxies that we've faced since the Cold War. America needs to wake up to the present danger Iran presents and has presented for nearly 30 years.

looks like standard to me,, Middle Easterners may not like to admit it but Western influence is a part of their lives whether they like it or not.

Most who produce these weapons are likely pretty literate and some of the experts in the production, may in fact have been educated in infidel institutions.
