School Lesson Has Students Chew Same Piece Of Gum

ROCKVILLE, Md. - Counseling officials in Maryland are being heavily criticized for introducing a lesson to four different schools – in which students were supposed to chew and pass around the same piece of gum.

The lesson was created by the Rockville (Md.) pregnancy counseling center in order to show students how easily sexually transmitted diseases are spread from person to person.

A speaker from the counseling center asked students to chew the same piece of gum to see how many would be willing to do it. School officials say at least 100 students participated in the exercise, but not all of them chewed the gum.

The county’s director of school health services called the lesson unsanitary and unacceptable. Many parents were also angered by the issue.

School officials say employees from the counseling center will not be asked to speak to their students again in the future.

What a bunch of morons!! All of them from the moron who thought this idea up to the kids that put used gum in their mouths. And the stupid schools that allowed this. Doesn't anyone have any common sense left? What happened if a student refused to chew used gum, did they pass or fail? I wonder how many cases of strep throat got passed around.... I would be flipping at this school and I hope if this Rockville (Md.) pregnancy counseling center gets any funding for moronic programs like this...they stop giving them a dime.

Wow, good way to pass around STDs, and all kinds of other diseases as well. Someone needs to lose their job over this.

No... lmao I bet it is.....I am still grossed out over the gum. I don't even let gum in my house. I make them all toss it out when I see the boys chewing it. I would dread seeing the bathrooms and who knows what other cr@p this group has shown or taught these kids. To think nobody had the sense this was a stupid idea really has me wondering who is on the board of ed there. Morons ....they are taking over the schools .

I would say many people need to lose their jobs....
What teacher with a bit of sense would allow this? Can they all have been so stupid? If you were a student would you even want to chew the gum? I would have failed with a F for sure. If my child was a student in any of these schools I would be flipping. I wonder how many kids got sick. I can't understand why anyone would chew someone's gum...thats plain nasty.

If there were sores in a person's mouth, herpes, even AIDS possibly, I believe. Not to mention colds, the flu, strep, measles, you name it. If there are any doctors in the house, please correct me if I'm wrong... But... Man, I wouldn't want my kids taking part in something like that!

So, if they didn't chew the gum how did they participate? Ah, it's not a pretty picture.

School officials say employees from the counseling center will not be asked to speak to their students again in the future

That's it? That's the end of it? The "counseling" center's employees will not be asked....asked!....asked?, to speak, speak to the students again. Speak? Don't they mean ordered, not asked and not to counsel, not speak to the students. Why would anyone be so soft on the counseling center as to "ask" them not to "speak".... Why aren't they being prosecuted for endangering the very lives of all the students who participated in the insane exercise. Kids think up, all on their own, enough things to get them in deep irreversible trouble. They certainly don't need the "help" of the likes of irresponsible counseling center counselors to counsel the kids by placing them in the exact danger they were counseling against. What idiocy is that. And for that they make money.

Insanity to the max.

Evidently. Just shows you how much our standards have declined for teachers. Disgraceful.

ROFL. It's a great idea. This probably saved some lives from HIV.
