Giuliani Strikes a Note With California GOP Testing the Waters, Former N.Y. Mayor Garners 4 Ovations

SACRAMENTO, Feb. 10 -- Rudolph W. Giuliani came west to learn whether his brand of Republican politics has a chance among party members significantly more conservative than himself. By the time he had received a fourth standing ovation Saturday at the California Republican Party convention, the answer seemed clear.

Equating the U.S. fight against terrorism with the Civil War and the Cold War, Giuliani told about 750 of his party's faithful that failure in Iraq would turn that country into a "massive headquarters for terrorism."

"Having had a job where I didn't have any choice but to make a decision," the former mayor of New York said, "prepares you as best you can be prepared to be the president of the United States."

Those who support Rudy know all about his liberal past.

And it is a liberal future they want... I oppose it...

We need a better conservative candidate than Rudy.

Any conservative... Julie-Annie is a liberal...

Seems you all are on the wrong forum promoting a liberal on a conservative board. Just saying.

Rudy's fiscal and national security record far overshadows his social liberalism and bizarre personal life. And yes, Rudy is a social conservative. He promoted equal rights and ended race-based preferences. He spoke out against welfare and fatherlessness, and drove the porn merchants out of Times Square. If that isn't conservative, then I don't know what is.

what side are you on?

Duncan Hunter is my pick.

My comment was aimed at your whining to the mods over something you disagreed with on an open thread.

Yes, you are right. The Real Rudy Giuliani:

From Human Events:

Rudy's Strong Pro-Abortion Stance

As these comments from a 1989 conversation with Phil Donahue show, Rudy Giuliani is staunchly in favor of abortion:

"I've said that I'll uphold a woman's right of choice, that I will fund abortion so that a poor woman is not deprived of a right that others can exercise, and that I would oppose going back to a day in which abortions were illegal.

I do that in spite of my own personal reservations. I have a daughter now; if a close relative or a daughter were pregnant, I would give my personal advice, my religious and moral views ...

Donahue: Which would be to continue the pregnancy.

Giuliani: Which would be that I would help her with taking care of the baby. But if the ultimate choice of the woman - my daughter or any other woman - would be that in this particular circumstance [if she had] to have an abortion, I'd support that. I'd give my daughter the money for it."

Worse yet, Giuliani even supports partial birth abortion:

"I'm pro-choice. I'm pro-gay rights,Giuliani said. He was then asked whether he supports a ban on what critics call partial-birth abortions. "No, I have not supported that, and I don't see my position on that changing," he responded." -- CNN.com, "Inside Politics" Dec 2, 1999

It's bad enough that Rudy is so adamantly pro-abortion, but consider what that could mean when it comes time to select Supreme Court Justices. Does the description of Giuliani that you've just read make you think he's going to select an originalist like Clarence Thomas, who would vote to overturn Roe v. Wade -- or does it make you think he would prefer justices like Sandra Day O'Connor and Anthony Kennedy who'd leave Roe v. Wade in place?

Rudy's abortion stance is bad news for conservatives who are pro-life or who are concerned about getting originalist judges on the Supreme Court.

An Anti-Second Amendment Candidate

In the last couple of election cycles, 2nd Amendment issues have moved to the back burner mainly because even Democratic candidates have learned that being tagged with the "gun grabber" label is political poison.

Unfortunately, Rudy Giuliani is a proponent of gun control who supported the Brady Bill and the Assault Weapon Ban.

Do Republicans really want to abandon their strong 2nd Amendment stance by selecting a pro-gun control nominee?

Brooklyn Museum Art Controversy In 1999 Giuliani threatened to cut off city funding for the Brooklyn Museum if the museum did not remove a number of works in an exhibit entitled “Sensation: Young British Artists from the Saatchi Collection.” One work in particular, The Holy Virgin Mary by Turner Prize winning-artist Chris Ofili (a Catholic himself), featured the Virgin Mary next to elephant dung and female genitalia pictures. It was targeted as being offensive to some in the Christian community in New York, leading the artist to comment that "This is all about control."

Rudy's liberalism on social issues is being exaggerated by some. Your above example is a good example of when Rudy is right on social issues. And there are other examples as well and I applaud him for it.

That said, on social issues, Rudy does have a big abortion, 2A and illegal immigration problem and at this point I won't settle for that.

Sometimes I wonder if Jesus Christ couldn't win the "base" - after all, He said "Love Your Neighbor", which automatically disqualifies Him on national security.

Whatever. We gotta long ways to go. See you at the yard.

Duncan Hunter is a 20 year congresscritter social/conservative fiscal/liberal.That model is worth about 35% of the general....and right now he is polling about 2%. With the front-loaded primaries...

A big spending GOP insider with no name recognition has as much chance of beating hillary as Custer's Bugler.

That said go Hunter..go Newt...it's a free country and let them fight it out.

Rudy is a babykiller

Really?

You lose credibility when you make false statements. (tip of the day)

Rudy never killed a baby, never had an abortion, never demanded abortion for others...

Who have, and seek, abortions?
Women.

Make your case to them, if you're successful, abortions will stop.

OK, so you don't like Rudy.

Like I tell the Democrats on the Iraq war, if you don't like it offer a better plan.

If you don't like Rudy then offer a better candidate who can win in November of 2008.

I get the gut feeling that somehow or somewhere we are going to have another really stupid (STUPID) egoistical H. Ross Perot debacle and elect Hellary to at least four years of tearing down this country.

I believe with all my lowly opinion that this next presidential election will define whether or not the United States remains a world power or becomes a hand maiden to the United Nations and another Euro weak sister.

You Rudy haters love to post this and that like those who support him do not have a clue for which he stands.

Personally, I like Duncan Hunter, but Duncan has about as much of a chance of winning the nominations as flatulence has in a tornado.

So do what ever you want to hurt the Republican Party's chances but remember this, when your crying your poor sad eyes out because Hellary or Osamma Obamma just got another piece of socialist legislation passed, you can thank yourself.

However, you will have the satisfaction of saying I Did It My Way But The Country Lost As The End Result.

If you look at the poll on this site...12% of people voted AGAINST what was described as THE perfect conservative candidate..

Go figure...some freepers will never be satisifed.

Why are you pinging pro life people? This thread isn't about abortion.

Are you a troll from Hillary's camp? You and Carville must be really scared of Rudy to stalk this messageboard.

"Yeah, I lurked a long time too"

I lurked for one whole day...lol

I found FreeRepublic by reading a book by Richard Poe.

Jim Robinson wrote the forward.

I was so impressed with Jim's words I only read a few dozen pages of the book before I went back to the forward to get the correct name for this site, found it on the puter and I have been here every day since.

I'll tell you right now, this Texan sees Giuliani as a closet Socialist--or worse. I see a pack of lies that he's passing to schmooze the people, yeah right Rudy, I've lived long enough to know a scam when I see it or hear it, no thanks.

What I hate, as an overt-desperate-to-retain-the-Exec-Branch Republican, is having to fling crap and be hit by it from fellow FReepers.

It's politics, and definitely the Big Leagues.

Looks like you are conspiring how to counter the fact Rudy is a member of an anti-war communist organization, or at the least a supporter of them.
