WEST PALM BEACH All entrances and exits to the Palm Beach International Airport have been re-opened as of 11:30 a.m. after a two-hour shutdown due to a bomb scare.
Around 9 a.m., officials found a suspicious package inside luggage a passenger had checked with an airline.
The commercial areas of the airport were shut down at 9:30 a.m. The entire first floor of the airport was evacuated and the middle section of the second was also cleared out. Commercial planes on runways were ordered grounded.
The Palm Beach Sheriff's Office Bomb and Arson Squad was called out. They took the package to a containment area to inspect it.
Sheriff's office spokeswoman Teri Barbera said the package was definitely not a bomb. "It seems to be some type of prop for a magical show," Barbera said.
The commercial areas were reopened at about 11:30 a.m. Planes that had been ordered grounded were permitted to take off.
Glenda Ehlinger of Royal Palm Beach arrived at the airport at 9:30 a.m. as the sheriff's office was bringing in its bomb-sniffing dog. She was a little worried about her 72-year-old mother, who'd arrived at about 10 a.m. on an AirTran flight from Newport News, Va.
Her mom is diabetic, said Ehlinger, who hoped she wouldn't have any trouble sitting on the plane for an extended period.
After leaving the airport to get coffee, Ehlinger waited with many other people on a median outside the airport entrance.
"They should have little port-a-potties out here," she said.
Jason Mitell and his wife Ruth Hardy, who were visiting the area from Vermont, allowed their three young children to get out of their car and play in the grass near the airport entrance on Australian Avenue.
The children were doing well. Greta Mitell, 6, said that by 11:20 a.m., she was "getting a little bored."
Jason Mitell said the family was glad to have a place where they could relax. "It would be far worse to be stuck on the (interstate) ramp."
PBIA spokeswoman Lisa de la Rionda said there were widespread delays on commercial flights, and there would be a ripple effect of delays throughout the afternoon.
