WASHINGTON In response to John Edwards' refusal to fire two staffers for "intolerant" Web postings, the president of the nation's largest Catholic civil rights group said he will launch a campaign next week to point out "the double-standard that [Edwards] is the kingmaker of."
Bill Donohue, president of the conservative-leaning Catholic League and the first to call on the Democratic presidential candidate to fire the bloggers, told FOXNews.com that he is not satisfied with Edwards' decision to scold but not can the staffers.

If these staffers worked for a Republican, this story would knock Anna Nicole Smith right off the front page.
"He's nothing more than a David Duke with a blow-dried hair cut">
Classic apparaisal of Edwards!!!
Edwards wants it both ways....
He wants to align himself with the bloggers and their viewpoint and then when this gets more media press, he will "fire " them cause he "has to".
I don't understand the furor over Edwards' campaign's behavior. Is it news to anyone that Democrats have about as much tolerance towards Christians as the Emperor Nero? Spewing hate and bigotry is what they do!
Good!
Believe it or not, there ARE folks out there who aren't aware of it.
I think Snicker-boy Edwards should be forced to keep these two skanks as punishment.
Edwards doesn't care about Christian people.
Voting for a CINO heretic does not qualify.
"I'm not going to say a lot about this right now, but suffice it to say that the fact I cast a vote, without hesitation, for a Catholic during the last presidential election might suggest I'm not anti-Catholic," she wrote. "My degree from Loyola University might also suggest the same."
She is not hate Catholics par se, she is hates Catholics who believe in the Catholic faith.
And as for Loyola University most Catholic Universities do not teach Catholic ideals any longer. I do not know if this is true of Loyola but if it is not Loyola would be an exception.
In a July interview cited by opponents, Hynes is quoted saying: "Is America a Christian nation? Of course it is. Don't be ridiculous. What a stupid question." His comments are more fully developed over 32 pages in his book, "In Defense of the Religious Right."
In reaction, one contributor on the liberal DailyKos blog wrote: "Hynes' public writing is devoted to pure religious divisiveness he focuses almost exclusively on the claim that Christianity is superior and that those who attend church live better lives."
The DailyKos writer then adds: "Ah, the civility of the far right. Why aren't intrepid New York Times reporters dogging Patrick Hynes?"
Go ahead. I dare you to.
I don't think Edwards had any choice. From everything I read, he is a practicing Christian (and these comments were offensive to all Christians and not merely Catholics) of the Jimmy Carter liberal variety. Certainly in his personal life, he appears to be more like a Carter than a Clinton.
But let's face it, firing the staffers (or rather, not rehiring them) would have doomed his chances in the Democratic primaries. This will haunt him in the general, but he doesn't get there until he passes muster with the liberal activists who decide the Dem nomination. His "personally offended" statement and extracting apologies from his staffers was the best option he had.
His screwup here was like Clinton nominating Lani Guinier for a Justice Department post and then yanking it after saying he hadn't read her record first. Once he had announced the hire, he was darned if he did, danged if he didn't (fire them I mean). Edwards should have done better staff work on the bloggers' "papere trail" before he hired them. There are actually liberal bloggers who seem like decent people and aren't foulmouthed extremists-- Kevin Drum at Washington Monthly and Ezra Klein at The American Prospect to name two-- there was no reason to attach a lightning rod to his golf cart. Edwards wife is more liberal than he and quite active on liberal blogs, I suspect she was the one who hired them, so I really think the guy got sandbagged inside his campaign and (I'd guess) his house.
I'm curious what his campaign manager, David Bonior thinks of all this. As I mentioned on PJ Comix's post earlier, Bonior is a pro-life Catholic. If he was overriden by the candidate to rehire the fired staffers, he has personal and profesional reasons to be pissed off right now.
Liberal don't care about people or even like them that much.
"The furor is about making the bile, hatred and vitriol at the core of the democRAT party more visible."
I agree that it's usually more subtle. Maybe we should be congratulating Edwards for coming out of the closet!
Sad by true.
max, believe it not I believe he is a Catholic.
