Clear Channel Radio changed the content of WAVZ-AM (1300) this week, from the likes of Al Franken and "The Voice" progressive talk to Dan Patrick and ESPN Radio sports talk. And some listeners are expressing dismay that the format was changed without on-air notice.
The station has had previous stints in sports talk, nostalgic music and (way back) Top 40 music, but for the past two-plus years featured political material from a rare vantage point on AM radio left of center.
The stations ratings werent very good, but some who enjoyed recent programming of the 1,000-watt station operated out of Clear Channels Radio Towers Park in Hamden are speaking up to protest the change. The station carried satellite-fed shows of the financially troubled Air America network, featuring the liberal voices of Stephanie Miller (who did shows from New Havens Omni New Haven Hotelat Yale in 2005), Ed Schultz and (outgoing) Franken.

Just go buy a copy of the NYT. You can get your daily dose of liberal dung there...
Since when has a radio station EVER pre-announced a format change?
Air America is like the tree that falls in the forest, and there's no one there to hear it fall...
They replaced it with ESPN radio??? I don't know why anyone there is surprised. At this point in the world, American professional sports & ESPN practically go hand in hand. Sheesh, even liberal men (oxymoron??) would probably be more interested in sports than politics.
Al Franken's mom complained?
Bad ratings on a 1KW transmitter....2, maybe 3 listeners, tops (and this newspaper somehow managed to find them).
I'm sure if they were listening to Air America they worked for the newspaper - not too hard to find them that way...
They usually don't even tell the DJ's, they come and get the boot!
So Pravda Radio America failed in Boston *and* New Haven? That's gotta say somethin'.....
I don't think the ratings were that low....maybe the ratings are 10 times what you said...maybe 20 or 30 listeners???
Well, 92.1 "The Mic" in Madison WI announced they were pulling the flush handle, not only on Err America but the whole idea of progressive talk, and moving to a sports format at the end of 2006. Loyal fanatics (long for "fans") mounted an offensive and convinced Clear Channel to reconsider.
Now of course it's a month later and they're equally screwed...no more Alfranken or the rest of that overpaid lot. We'll see how long Clear Channel tires of babysitting this tiny audience before doing again, for real.
I was thinking the same thing.
Not as dismayed as my mother was when the Big Band station in Boston put Al Franken on.
What they fail to realize is that the base who keep that party viable, do not pay attention to anything slightly mentally stimulating. When one does, he/she normally migrates to the right.
You can't count the captive audience down at the Golden Years Rest Home.
BOOGER!
