Planning Board In Favor Of Another Day-Labor Center
(Rockville, MD) -- The Montgomery County Planning Board on Thursday voted in favor of a plan supported by County Executive Isiah Leggett to open a third county-funded day laborer center between Rockville and Gaithersburg.
The "Washington Post" reports it could bring an end to the local debate on immigration. Some residents at the hearing called the plan a nuisance, having workers gathering on their streets.
For almost a year, Gaithersburg leaders and the county have been at odds over where to locate the center for 40 mostly immigrant workers, who meet at the residential neighborhood looking for temporary work from painting to landscaping.
The location agreed upon is at Shady Grove Road and I-370 on Crabbs Branch Way. The review by the Planning Board Thursday is advisory, with the site's approval not needed by the County Council. Chuck Short, the county executive's special assistant, says Montgomery County hopes to open the center by March 1st.
Like everything else lately, the cold has played a role, with County Executive Leggett saying "it's cold outside and people are standing around on sidewalks, that doesn't reflect the dignity that I think our community should display."

The discussion on WMAL's morning show indicated that federal law prohibits localities from giving benefits to illegals other than tax payer funded government education and medical care. Anyone willing to take this to court and shut it down?
Oh, and free bus fare will be given to the illegals to get to the Illegal Alien Work Center. Legal residents don't get free bus fare to get to work.
Nothing's stopping legal residents from working day labor and getting the free bus fare. I know what you're trying to say but I just had to point that out.
Welcome to the Popular República Democrática de Maryland.
"it's cold outside and people are standing around on sidewalks"
It's 80 degrees in Mexico.
huh?
If they are worried about the cold, they need to return south, if they are illegal.
Oh ok. I thought that you were actually making a reply to my comment.
The IRS ought to keep tabs on who's going there, getting work, and audit to see that taxes are being paged on the wages.
As per usual,,,don't enforce the law, just give them what they want.
They (the illegal aliens - not allowed to legally vote) have become a big voting block in Maryland.
Post of the day!
Montgomery county residents need only find an attorney who's willing to file a class action RICO suit on their behalf.
