Yes. But he was not talking about the past. He was talking about while we are in this earthly vessel. As C.S. Lewis said, trying to explain heaven to men is like trying to explain a cube to a man that lives in a two dimensional world.
I do subcribe to this concept: Time flows like a river. Eternity is an ocean.
In essence I too believe in absolute 100% Mercy. BUT, it is mercy from our inadequacies, NOT from our inactions.
