Whole Foods, the Austin, Texas-based natural foods grocery chain, decided to take a stand against the unethical and painful treatment of crustaceans. Last June the chain said they would no longer sell live lobsters and crabs. The Whole Foods ban would apply even to the crustacean capital of North America: The State of Maine.
But today they rolled back that rule with some stipulations.
Whole Foods decided to sell lobsters at its Portland, Maine store after finding a company that met its demands for how the lobsters should be treated.
The lobsters will be kept in private compartments instead of being piled on top of each other in a tank, and workers will use a kind of stun gun device that zaps them with a 110-volt electric shock to spare them the agony of being boiled alive in a pot of water.
Oh, the agony!
Whole Foods standards for lobsters are similar to those it uses in buying its meat, poultry and other animal products, said David Lannon, regional president for the North Atlantic region.

We were taught to hypnotize them by standing them on end in a kind of claw stand. It seemed to calm them down and was another way to play with them after racing them.
So it's really gonna play with the libbies' minds when they zap the lobsters first and they STILL "scream" when put in the pot! Hee hee!!!
You gotta rip those bodies apart and get at that knuckle meat.
TXU....Zotting trolls and lobsters for over 20 years.
The problem with have is empathizing with crustaceans and fish, assuming they are the same as us. They aren't.
Or, try the old saying about a frog, which I am not sure is true, put them in cold water and turn on the fire. At what point, if any, would they begin to feel pain?
However, it is best to do as I do when eating - don't think about how they got there or what they are. They are food! Prepare them and eat them!
Raw oysters are live oysters and I eat them and love them without thinking about it. It is not pleasant to think about the slaughter of livestock, cutting them up and eating them, so I don't think about it, I just eat it.
A few years ago I read that plants emit a sound when cut or pulled, indicating awareness. Should we not eat plants either?
Buying food in a market or restaurant is much easier than the way old timers did it. They hunted, fished, and farmed and then killed, dressed, or pulled from the ground or plants what they wanted, rarely, if ever, thinking the thoughts we are discussing.
I applaud your feelings and I am much the same. I rationalize it by remembering tha God gave man diminion over the earth and that we must have food. Food animals are not pet animals although some become so.
I am kind to cows and chickens but I try to put it in perspective. Is eating eggs supporting abortion?? Perspective is the answer. It's us agains them as to whom will live or die!
