Dealing with the new anti-Semitism

In Chris Hedges' new book, American Fascists, there is a passage that recalls the challenge facing the hundreds of Jews gathered in frigid, frozen Ottawa this week.
Quoting Italian medievalist Umberto Eco, the Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times writer observes that fascists have a continual need to "feel humiliated by the ostentatious wealth and force of their enemies." Anti-Semites insinuate that Jews are powerful out of proportion to their numbers, running Hollywood, the news media and successive U.S. administrations. Since 9/11 in particular, these propagandists have insisted that loud, pushy Jews use this power to ram a destructive foreign policy agenda down the West's throat.
For many Jews gathered at the annual meeting of the Canadian Council for Israel and Jewish Advocacy (CIJA) in Ottawa this week, the antipathy they often feel does not originate with copies of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, slipped under their hotel room doors at night. It comes, they allege, from the news media. The Canadian news media, even.
As they gathered in corridors and meeting rooms overlooking the skaters on the Rideau Canal, Jews expressed their concern that news coverage and editorial comment is increasingly hostile to Israel -- especially in the wake of the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah. Is it true? Certainly, among many delegates, there were familiar and specific complaints about the treatment Israel receives at the hands of the CBC, and some commentators at the Toronto Star and Globe and Mail. Following speeches Western Standard publisher Ezra Levant and I delivered to delegates about the Internet and blogging, we heard this message over and over.
The names of Israel's friends in the news media, meanwhile, were equally familiar: isolated voices at the Globe, Toronto Star and CBC in the form of Marcus Gee, Rosie Di Manno and Rex Murphy --plus pretty much everyone at CanWest and the National Post. All are considered to be stalwarts of Israel.
Why does any of it matter, one might ask. Why are Jews so preoccupied with what the news media has to say? Because Canadians depend heavily on the media for news about developments abroad. There is no other news topic that is more susceptible to manipulation -- and, therefore, so acutely in need of fairness and balance. Too much is at stake to tolerate sloppiness or bland expressions of prejudice.
A prediction: As the immediacy and the magnitude of the Iranian threat becomes more apparent, Canadians will recognize that Israel -- alone in the region -- is a bulwark against Tehran's plans for a nuclear weapons program. Canadians will recognize that Israel's interests and Canada's are congruent: democracy, tolerance, multiculturalism. The Canadian media will reach this conclusion, too.
That day will not be long in coming. As Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Opposition leader Stephane Dion concluded stirring pro-Israel speeches in Ottawa on Tuesday night -- and following clear articulations of support by the NDP and Bloc Quebecois leaders, by the way -- a disturbing reminder arrived on dozens of Black Berries in the cavernous hall where CIJA gathered. "An Iranian government-sponsored body set up to probe the veracity of the Holocaust," began the wire story, "has challenged Europe to hand over documents about the mass slaughter of Jews in World War II." The Beast of fascism is awake, once again, and now makes its foul lair in Tehran. It is incumbent on all of us (the media included) to pay closer attention, and be prepared for its next move -- slouching, as it does, toward its goal of attempting another Final Solution.

On the up side, Kinsella is an avowed leftist who, not withstanding, routinely breaks away from the PC herd to offer moral clarity & 'let the chips fall where they may' highly insightful analysis.
On the other, he's a rabidly partisan Liberal Party insider & unprincipled strategist often rightly billed by Conservatives up here as Canada's answer to despicable swamp creature James Carville.

It has always seemed to me that if Jews are running the left-leaing main stream media, then they truly are hoisting themselves on their own petard.

Can we lump all the Jews together? I guess we cannot. There seem to be at least two diametrically opposing groups of Jews here.
True. For a good many Jews their commitment to leftist and anti-Western civilization causes seems to trump any commitment to the survival of Israel.
If, indeed, jews are running the main stream media, I think you can make a pretty good case that a vast majority of them are left-leaning.

Agreed - a vast majority of the ones running the media, but surely not the entire Jewish population. That moron Goober Pyle is the governor of New Mexico, but that don't make me a democrat.
Exactly. If they really want to ensure anti-semitism is curtailed, they need to align themselves with the people that are supportive of them. There is no other group more pro-Israel and pro-Jew than Evangelical Christians; many whom would die to prevent them from being slaughtered again. I won't go into details, but I knew of a family that built a secret room in their house a few years ago because of the way they see things going.... Who knows what's going to happen. They've always been the scapegoats.
Chris Hedges, isn't he the guy who wrote (in The Guardian, I think) that Israeli soldiers like to shoot little Palestinian kids just for fun?

The owners of the NY Slimes have not been Jewish for years -they are Episcopalian! The yalso covered up the Holocaust. People such as myself,f who really are Jewish, boycott the NY Crimes and refuse to watch the Clinton News Network.
Tis particular group does not even care about ITS OWN SURVIVAL. They are the first ones that the Islamofascists will kill. They are just plain stupid!
