February 8, 2007 - Clinton, Giuliani Early Favorites In Pennsylvania, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Race Is Close In Pennsylvania, Ohio, Florida
In an early look at the 2008 presidential race, Pennsylvania voters back former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani by a narrow 47 - 44 percent over New York Sen. Hillary Clinton, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Arizona Sen. John McCain gets 46 percent to Sen. Clinton's 45 percent, a tie.

Clinton is in a close race with either Giuliani or McCain in three swing states polled by Quinnipiac (KWIN uh-pe-ack) University: She leads McCain 46 - 42 percent and Giuliani 46 - 43 percent in Ohio (January 30); February 7 Florida results show Giuliani over Clinton 47 - 44 percent and Clinton edging McCain 47 - 43 percent.

In a Pennsylvania primary, Clinton leads the Democratic pack with 37 percent, followed by 11 percent each for Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, 2004 vice presidential candidate John Edwards and former Vice President Al Gore. Delaware Sen. Joseph Biden gets 5 percent.

Giuliani leads the Republican field with 30 percent, with 20 percent for McCain, 14 percent for former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and 4 percent for former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

"While Sen. Hillary Clinton polls more votes than Barack Obama, John Edwards and Al Gore combined in the Democratic race for president, Rudy Giuliani would give her a run for the money in the general election in Pennsylvania," said Clay F. Richards, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

"The former First Lady has her work cut out for her in the Keystone state - a swing state that must be on her must-win list. Giuliani's 9/11 hero status probably will fade some in a campaign centered on other issues, but Clinton must work hard to bring up her numbers among independents and men to carry the state. And the Philadelphia suburbs already look like a key 2008 battleground in Pennsylvania," Richards added.

In other possible Pennsylvania presidential matchups:
  • Clinton 53 - 34 percent over Romney;
  • McCain 46 - 39 percent over Obama;
  • McCain 47 - 42 percent over Edwards.

Pennsylvania voters give Clinton a 53 - 39 percent favorability rating. Favorability ratings for other contenders are:
  • 61 - 18 percent for Giuliani;
  • 54 - 20 percent for McCain;
  • 39 - 15 percent for Obama, with 45 percent who haven't heard enough to form an opinion;
  • 43 - 27 percent for Edwards, with 29 percent who haven't heard enough;

  • 27 - 30 percent for Biden, with 40 percent who haven't heard enough;
  • 48 - 45 percent for Gore;
  • 30 - 48 percent for Gingrich;
  • For Romney, 76 percent haven't heard enough to form an opinion.
President Bush's Approval

Pennsylvania voters disapprove 62 - 33 percent of the job President George W. Bush is doing and say 66 - 28 percent that the nation is on the wrong track. The war in Iraq is the most important problem facing the country today, 46 percent of voters say.

Voters disapprove 66 - 29 percent of President Bush's handling of the war in Iraq and oppose 64 - 32 percent the President's plan to send 22,000 more troops to Iraq.

From February 1 - February 5, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,014 Pennsylvania voters with a margin of error of +/- 3.1 percentage points. The survey includes 438 Republicans and 442 Democrats, each with a margin of error of +/- 4.7 percentage points.

The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio and the nation as a public service and for research. Many of us are just as repelled and disgusted with the prospect of him as the leader of the entire country, as we are hillary being President.

Your fear is based on ignorance not on fact. I saw and felt his effect first hand....I'm not worried in the least.

He came in to office with the ultra liberal legal tools that were esablished long before he came onto the scene; he utilized them brilliantly and ruthlessly - for the betterment of all.

And Hitler made the trains run on time.

Again, an ignorant comment regarding Ruy's stewardship in the apple.

On Gun Control, he would not impose NYC gun laws on the rest of the nation.

How do you REALLY know?

'Cause he SAYS so NOW, AFTER a life-long track-record of supporting Draconian gun-control?

If you believe this northeastern inner-city anti-gun/2nd Amendment liberal lawyer/political opportunist of the highest order, then you are foolish.

There's no guarantee that Hillary would carry PA. There's the unknown factor of "first woman presidential candidate" to consider - we don't know how the public (Dems and Pubbies) will react to that factor.
