It was great of Bush to start it. He just doesn't have a clue as to how to win it and has seemingly morphed into a republican Jimmy Carter.
Peace through superior firepower!

But the soldiers themselves say that much of their work is going door to door, getting to know the communities, earning the trust of the people.
Then later, the people of the village become informants and warn our soldiers of danger, and of attacks that are being planned against US forces. Then the insurgents are pushed out into the open to defend themselves.
These actions lead to even greater support of our troops.
There are also the stories of children, women and the elderly being terribly injured and then healed by our wonderful military doctors. The families and the village's hierarchy then return to the hospitals, showing their gratitude. And from then on, they support the US completely. More good will is fostered and lives are saved.
You can't just bomb a city and hope to avoid killing civilians. The bombing raids have their purpose. But it is still the soldiers on the ground, going door to door, that are turning entire communities around.
