Clinton did it, but it was Hillary's doing and most are still there, waiting for her to become POTUS.... many were people she owed favors and old college friends.

I recognize that he has positions on trade and on the border that some are vehemently opposed to. Those make for healthy discussion and disagreement.

I was only challenging the corruption-type references. Several California Congressman supported some of the same earmarks as did Cunningham. Early on, the San Diego Union-Tribune (who pretty much broke the Cunningham scandal with their reporting) suggested that others might also go under the microscope. A couple years later, I have yet to hear that Hunter was ever a target of any investigation or seen any suggestion that there was wrong-doing on his part. Brent Wilkes is connected to tons of politicians; he was even a Bush "Pioneer." The US Attorney in San Diego is wrapping up her investigation; she has also submitted her resignation and word is she will issue the indictment before leaving office. If there is anything implicating Hunter, we would see it then.

It is my hope that the decision will be overturned on appeal.

If everything that is alleged to have been done wrong in this case is even partially true, then I hope their convictions will be overturned on appeal as well. However, I suspect the difference between us is that if the convictions are not overturned, I will not automatically leap to the conclusion that the appeals court is in on the conspiracy to get these two men (for reasons that have yet to be explained to me).

Do you then oppose the prosecution by the Feds of Deputy Sheriff Hernandez, not a Federal, but a local officer, on charges similar to those on which Compean and Ramos were tried?

Never heard of the case. As is common here, though, you'll probably expect me to have an opinion anyway.

Another element is the avoidance of double jeopardy. Did you support the conviction of Stacy Koon in Los Angeles by the Feds in the Rodney King mater even though a state jury acquitted them?

I am absolutely opposed to the circumvention of the principle of double jeopardy by having the Feds retry a state case, the outcome of which was not liked by pressure groups. I think what happened to those officers in the Rodney King case was a genuine travesty of justice.

A third element is preservation of the rights and privileges of American citizens, and not those of people in our country illegally. Do you believe aliens in this country illegally have the same civil rights as native born or naturalized citizens?

Absolutely not.

Yes, I am a real conservative, and proud of it. A person who defends injustice, opposes states rights, does not agree with the Constitutional guarantee against double jeopardy, and wants to place illegals (and drug smugglers to boot) on a legal par with citizens may be a lot of things, but one thing he is not is a conservative.

What I have discovered about "real" conservatives -- at least those who inhabit these boards -- is that they tolerate not the slightest deviation from opinions they hold. Heck, they are knee-jerk intolerant even if there isn't any real deviation, but someone just comes at an issue from a perspective they don't understand. And, just as you have done to me, they arrogate to themselves the right to interrogate people who do dare to express a different opinion on a particular issue.

I said nothing of the kind.

No, but it is the natural and only conclusion to be drawn from the allegations being made about the railroading of the two "heroes."

No, he can't fire the prosecutor.

He can pardon the border guards AFTER he reviews the case.

Fifth grade history is really not all that difficult and should be known by all adults. You are an adult, aren't you?

The Patriot Act changed quite a few laws.

http://www.tpmmuckraker.com/archives/002348.php

WH Moved Swiftly to Replace US Attorneys By Paul Kiel - January 16, 2007, 3:22 PM The administration is replacing U.S. Attorneys throughout the country. How'd they get that power?

It was an obscure provision in the USA PATRIOT Improvement and Reauthorization Act, and it didn't take them very long to use it. The president signed it into law in March of last year -- by June, they were already moving to replace unwanted prosecutors.

Former Arkansas USA Bud Cummins told the Wall Street Journal that "a top Justice official asked for his resignation in June, saying the White House wanted to give another person the opportunity to serve." Cummins was finally forced out in December, replaced with Timothy Griffin, formerly the research director of the Republican National Committee.

Section 502 of the PATRIOT Act reauthorization, which was first drafted in July of 2005 and finally signed in March of 2006, changed the law regarding the appointment of U.S. Attorneys. Whereas before the relevant federal district court would have appointed a replacement within 120 days after the Attorney General picked one, now that pick stood without challenge.

How did this (brief, legalistically worded, but powerful) section get in to the bill? It's not clear. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) has consistently referred to the provision as "little noticed." What is clear is that Feinstein and her colleagues did not expect the provision to be used in this way. We'll have more on this as we learn more.

That is NOT how it works. He does not sit there and follow teh details of trials. He has 40 hours of work crammed in a 10 hour day as it is.

I find the news that the Phoenix U.S. Attorney's office is no longer bothering with loads under five hundred (500) pounds delicious.

And eleven months after this trial which of course was a marvel of justice the transcript is unavailable.

And the president who appointed the attorney general who told off our capital city morning talk show host in precisely the same smarmy tone Tony Snow used to do the same is held harmless despite his aggressive No Mexican Left Behind policy.

And FBI Director Mueller as well as relevant officials in the glorious Department of Home (haha) Land Security are carefully monitoring the growing number of OTMs from nations of concern caught crossing the southern border.

Why only yesterday Sandy Berger committed felonies to conceal the criminal negligence of the Clinton Administration regarding its efforts following the accidental capture of the Millenium Bomber--and that was one invader, one vehicle, one trunkload of explosives.

The current literature suggests al Qaeda and other enemies of the nation are able to come and go at will.

Not all the lost Egyptian students are happily located in Iowa.

Jurors felt coerced; the prosecution lied; the ballistics are exculpatory; the victims are at peril and one has been beaten.

Bleeding from the ears? Put some ice on it.

I voted for this president and my only quarrel with his Iraq venture is that he doesn't simply take out the likes of al Sadr, and walk--no, run--the cat back to Tehran and take out Rat Boy.

But the border? Judge Judy would say, "Don't pee on my leg and tell me it's raining?"

So, hey, all enemies foreign and domestic, whatever, but the first five hundred pounds is free, and we'll smack down those on the border who take their oath seriously, and as for whistle blowers like Rowley and Weldon, well, we have our ways.

And, Alex, the answer to the Sanchez question is, "Who was the perp's high school amiga?"

Who took his side and smeared her fellow officers.

Is this a great country or what?

However, I really have very little faith in the justice system...

After living through the Rodney King riots and the OJ Simpson fiasco here in Los Angeles, I also have very little faith in the justice system.

...it is entirely possible that politics heavily influenced the prosecution and the rules of evidence in this case

Yes, it's possible. Maybe it even happened. I don't know. But I ask why all of this power supposedly came down on these two men.

Calling for a presidential pardon to follow a complete review does not equal "tossing the Constitution overboard."

True, and that's not my argument. However, asking for this or any President to interfere in a judicial proceeding (appeal) that has not reached its conclusion, and threatening him with impeachment if the men are harmed in prison most certainly is precisely that.

What, pray tell, does hiring "lots" of agents have to do with a directive not to prosecute for drug running under 500 pounds? You or I try running 500 pounds and see how long we'd go away?

Saul Alinsky would be proud of you. When arguments don't work, scream "tinfoil hat", Bircher, conspiracy theorist, racist, fascist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, yada yada yada, at the top of your lungs. BTW, your style would be very much appreciated at Democratic Underground or similar Web sites.
